Description

This innovative resource for therapists trained in Standard EMDR delivers a powerful set of EMDR-based “Tools” – useful strategies for helping difficult-to-treat clients with complex emotional problems. The second edition reflects the author’s ongoing efforts to design treatments that can significantly extend the therapeutic power of methods based on an Adaptive Information Processing model. It describes new discoveries that promote effective ways of structuring therapy sessions and refines original treatment procedures that can facilitate and safely accelerate therapeutic progress.

EMDR Toolbox provides an overview of the principal issues in treating these complex emotional problems and describes highly effective methodologies with a wide variety of clinical presentations that originate in or include disturbing traumatic memories. It also describes how to integrate specific EMDR-related interventions with other psychotherapeutic treatments. Each intervention is examined in detail with accompanying transcripts, client drawings, and case studies illustrating the nuances and variations in intervention application. Bolstered by supporting theory and current research, this EMDR book also discusses how the concepts and vocabulary of other models of dissociation translate directly into EMDR’s Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) language.

New to the Second Edition:

  • Describes new strategies and refinements of standard methods for treatment of clients with complex emotional problems
  • Includes two completely new chapters, “Internal Healing Dialogue” and “Case Example: treating the problem of ‘attachment to the perpetrator’”
  • Provides new case examples on childhood sexual abuse
  • Offers new sections on treating chronic defensive shame, the importance of “fast” vs “slow” thinking processes, and new applications of “Loving Eyes” procedures
  • Includes eBook with the purchase of print version

Key Features:

  • Written by an EMDRIA-designated “Master Clinician”
  • Delivers successful treatments alternatives for difficult-to-treat clients
  • Provides a theoretical framework to guide assessment and treatment of clients with complex PTSD
  • Includes specific AIP tools, verbatim therapy scripts, client drawings, and case studies

This is my favorite EMDR book I’ve ever ordered (I think I bought about 10 this year). If I could turn back time this would be one of 2 I would repurchase. Amazing – added depth to my skill and sparked an interest for me in Parts work- something I never gravitated to before.

  5. Janet L Ditslear (verified owner)

I love this book and was able to use the tools and strategies immediately in my practice as an EMDR therapist. This book provides beautiful guidance and examples around how to work with the various defenses that our clients bring into our office. These strategies allow for working with clients in a gentle and respectful way – regardless of where they are at.
An all-time favourite for sure and one I know I will refer to regularly in my practice!

I have been dealing with Complex PTSD pretty much my entire life and have had EMDR and read a ton of books on that and other PTSD subjects over the past 10 years, and this book was still able to open my eyes into one important aspect of my life, which I am in the middle of trying to tackle now. It’s very hard, but without this book I would have never realized this very very important self-destructive habit that I have that is keeping me feeling worthless and stupid. Which I know I am not as I graduated valedictorian as an Online Media Specialist in CA (and English isn’t my native language, I did this course when I first came to this country), and I graduated with honors from a German hotel school, and worked as an Executive Secretary at a major movie studio and credit card company….. After becoming a stay-at-home Mom I kind of got lost I guess…… Never thought I was a good enough mom, and then I felt like I could never do anything good enough anymore… I am very glad I came across this book!

A very educational book about EMDR! If there is one book that I would recommend if you are interested in the theory of EMDR, it’s this book.

For a practitioner of EMDR and hypnosis this book is a real help. It describes situations met in daily practice and the tools can be immediately applied. It made me understand some of my therapy failures and i use some of the graphics with my patients. I am sure to come back to it in the future. A must for every EMDR practitioner.

When I did advanced trainings in EMDR I was most interested in better understanding dissociation and how to modify EMDR protocols to safelyand effectively process with those with complex trauma. I found Jim Knipe’s methods of targeting defenses to be incredibly powerful and helpful for my clients. Moreso than any other method I’d learned. I’ve read this book twice and taken his online training. His work aligns well with Dolores Mosquera’s Progressive Approach and I am so grateful for these innovators for bringing into the world the notion that BLS can be helpful in facilitating dialogues between parts and processing elements such as blocks to feeling, not just whole memories. IMO this is a must read for working with complex trauma with EMDR.

This has totally improved my practice. I would suggest reading one chapter at a time and applying it as you learn the chapter. Definitely not a book that you read all the way through.

  15. Ouzola Customer (verified owner)

This book puts the meat on the bones of the protocol and shows how to apply EMDR to a variety of issues. It’s expensive, but very helpful and easy to read.

  16. Jeanne Murphey (verified owner)

Dr. Knipe gives a readable in-depth explanation of how EMDR can be used to assist patients dealing with complex PTSD.

  17. Mary (verified owner)

I love this book. It was recommended to me! It has come in very handy in my practice and also just to further my understanding and expand my technique.

  18. Rachel (verified owner)

Incredibly useful if you work with dissociative clients (and all clients really).

  19. Lawrence Goh (verified owner)

Great for those proficient with basic EMDR protocols and starting to encounter complex PTSD scenarios.
