I bought this book after hearing about the postivie outcomes of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
This book is amazing. You only read certain chapters that pertain to your specific problem (it tells you in the beginning which ones for which problems) and follow the instructions. My problem is panic disorder, so I looked up and know which chapters to read and complete. It takes a lot of work on your part, doing exercises, following through on things, I am only done with the first chapter I have to read and have done all but one of the exercises, and I already feel better!
My therpaist is buying a copy of this book to follow along with my progress. It will take a while, but with lots of hard work and a little patience, I hope to be medication free within the year! I know I may never be panic free, but my goal is to minimize it and make my life happy and liveable while medication free.
I highly recommend this book!!

I am on my third workbook. The first fell apart I used it with clients so much. The second was cast by the wayside when the third edition came out because of the amazing new chapter on mindfulness. It is full of cognitive balancing skills and coping methods. One can use it alone or with a therapist. I have seen it heal anger, depression, anxiety and even help with self-esteem.

This workbook is great for anyone. In this day and age where it is easy to go on emotional tangents whether you suffer from mental illness or not, this is a door of opportunity to really “think” before we act on thoughts that have no real bearing on reality. With this and prayer one can’t go wrong!

Thoughts & Feelings is a fantastic, easy-to-read self-help workbook utilising the principles of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). CBT is a type of psychotherapy that has been extensively researched and validated for a range of mental health problems and is considered to be the treatment of choice for many disorders, such as depression and anxiety.
Thoughts & Feelings contains chapters dedicated to common problems such as coping with panic, worry control, depressive thinking, overcoming phobias, controlling anger and relaxation techniques, such as mindfulness. Each chapter is dedicated to a specific topic and contains some useful background information plus loads of exercises to help the reader deal with the problem. The workbook contains activity pages that the reader can write on to undertake the activity or exercise.
I would recommend this workbook for anyone wanting to overcome the specific problems that are the central features of this book, namely depression, anxiety, phobias, worry, anger, stress and panic.
I would also recommend this book to CBT therapists to use with their clients as the authors use jargon-free and easy-to-read language that clients with no prior knowledge of CBT would easily understand. As such, the workbook will aide therapists in explaining the CBT model to cleints. Furthermore, the activities are great at tackling the core thoughts that are believed to maintain common client problems such as depressionn or anxiety.

My therapist suggested that I get Thoughts and Feelings, and so I did. It’s a workbook based on cognitive behavioral therapy, which it briefly discusses in the opening chapter. Its 21 chapters are dedicated to different emotions and gives readers ways to confront their thoughts and emotions, understand them, and work through them for a positive outcome. I think it’s very useful either for people who adhere to the tenents of this school to psychology or for those who don’t know anything about it. For example, the chapter Coping with Panic begins with describing what this disorder is. Then, the chapter moves through several phases: Symptom Effectiveness, Time for Mastery, and Insructions divided in four steps. The four steps take the reader through understanding what panic is, learning how to use breath control to reduce panic, learning how to “restructure” thoughts through examing probability outcomes (a work chart is used for this process), and desensitizing oneself to overcome the problem (again, charts are used to follow the process). Throughout the chapter several examples are used so that readers can better understand the exercises and outcomes. Finally, the chapter concludes with “Special Considerations” in case the reader has difficulties during the exercises and afterward. Each chapter is structured in the same way and methodically takes the reader through the process of identifying and overcoming the problem presented. I’ve never worked with a book like this, but I think it’s a valuable tool to accompany therapy sessions, giving, in a sense, homework that reinforces what is learned or discussed in sessions. It would also be a useful tool for someone to use independently because of its clear explanations along the way, the tight structure of the chapters’ exercises, and the examples related to each process. The language throughout is down-to-earth, not “psychobabble,” and not speaking over the readers’ heads. The writing style is crisp and clear, and people will have no trouble understanding anything discussed along the way. Although I don’t wholeheartedly subscribe to cognitive behavioral psychotherapy, I believe that it’s a useful method for gaining insight into how one thinks and why and how one can make positive changes in thinking and feeling. I’d highly recommend the book for anyone seeking help with troubled thinking, either as a companion to therapy or as a tool to work with alone.

I purchased the book in “used” condition for far less than the sale price if I had bought it new. It arrived quickly and looked like it was brand new and had never been opened. I was thoroughly pleased with the condition of the product.

I found this book to be very helpful with my journey to improve myself. The chapters are short and to the point, including exercises and examples for self-improvement. The book also includes a chart relating the chapters to areas of your life you may want to improve. Easy to read.

This is an awesome book in more ways than one. First, it is doesn’t have a lot of technical language in it which makes easy for anyone to understand and read. Second, you don’t have to sit down and read the whole book to get what you need out of it. All you need to do is read through the first chapter, which is a short chapter, then decide what you feel you need with. For example if you need help with anxiety it will tell you what chapter/s you need to read. I think this book could also be used by counselors as homework for thier clients. This is a good book and I recommend it to anyone.

I assign many activities from this book to my clients. What one client (an avid reader of self-help books) liked best about this book were the examples of how to complete the assignments. My clients find it easy to read, understand and use. I was using the first edition of the book (required reading in grad school for my CBT class)until my client bought the fourth edition and we compared editions. The fourth edition has some excellent updates so I immediately purchased it also. I would highly recommend this to clinicians for use in practice and anyone else needing to get their thoughts and feelings under control.

User-friendly descriptions of Cognitive behavioral therapy skills with examples and handouts and record-keeping. I have used this with teenagers and adults successfully.

If you are serious about applying cognitive behavioral therapy to your everyday life, this is the boook for you. This book has helped me with depression beyond measure. The exercises are very doable and practical. Highly reccomended!

This book is not a substitute for professional help if you have serious issues, but if it’s some modest thing like the occasional panic attack or obsessive thoughts at 3 AM, you don’t have to spend ages analyzing where it came from, you just look up the symptoms in the book and do the assigned exercises. We found it helped immediately. Simple, fast, effective, and a lot cheaper than a therapist. You don’t even have to read the whole book. There’s a table that shows you which chapters are relevant to whatever you want to work on. But while you’re at it, read Mindsight by Daniel Siegel.

This book has some helpful tips. It could use more worksheet pages that are user friendly. I do like the way the author broke down subjects.

I have referred back to this book many times over the years and I’ve recommended it to others. I appreciate its non-sentimentality and logical methodology. The authors focus on practical techniques to relieve suffering. There are skills here anyone can use in therapy or not. I especially recommend it to men who are nervous about self-help books. It is compassionate but not overly emotional. It treats unwholesome thought patterns as a problem to be solved with a step-by-step process.

I bought this because I was looking for ideas to use for group counseling
and also to help me become more aware of my own thoughts.
I like the variety of approaches you can use to tackle anxiety.
I have used some of the visualizations and relaxation methods with clients
and I received positive feedback.
This is a very practical workbook and I would recommend it to clients and counselors.

My therapist recommended this book and it has been more helpful than anything I’ve read. I’ve been diagnosed with both Bipolar 2 and Borderline Personality. The techniques and exercises in this book are easy to put into practice and have greatly helped reduce and minimize meltdowns and anxiety.

Regardless your “mental” state this book covers something for everyone, whether it is being shy and afraid to speak up in groups or simply how to deal with your feelings and your reaction to them.
Darlene Gilcreast (verified owner) –
Very helpful book for people suffering from depression and their significant others. Many people suffering from depression feel alone. They don’t realize how common the problem is. This book contains practical exercises for helping people recognize and deal with anxiety and depression. It was very useful.

People are the core of any organization we belong to or any project we undertake. Thoughts and feelings are at the core of people. If we can master our own thoughts and feelings, we can certainly get a big head start towards success in almost any situation.

This is a “self help” work-book. If you read it and actually practice the advice… it works! Don’t let it just lay on your table! Contains good examples on how to handle adverse situations & offers good relaxation techniques. If you can combine book with group counseling sessions I’d give it a “5” star grade. It’s working for me because I’m referring to the appropriate chapters (as needed) and following the advice.

This book is EXCEPTIONAL. I use the material gleaned here EVERY DAY in my group therapy practice. It’s not just CBT, but it also covers progressive relaxation, guided imagery, inner child work, along with some of the most lucid lines I’ve ever read on how automatic thoughts work. A must have for ever clinician.

I just wish all CBT taught the same thinking errors with the same names. Pretty basic stuff though

Cognitive therapy. Helpful in thinking before acting. Helps break negative and angry gut level reactions. An earlier edition of the same book sells in bookstores for 3 times the price. Has worksheets which help you personalize the methods to your own issues. Recommended by my counselor.

Have not worked through the book yet, but it looks to be really deep. I will post if there is anything negative after going through it, but so far so good!

An actual workbook with concrete exercises and steps to help you work through your own thoughts. At the very least it allows you to move forward and DO SOMETHING about the way you feel. This is all information found in many different locations if you look, but here they are together and concepts are explained and then you practice them. excellent and has helped me already.

Great book. Arrived quickly and in good condition. I think this will really help me with my agoraphobia. The book is organized into chapters. Each chapter offers a different set of exercises. You do different chapters depending on what your condition is. Like for agoraphobia you first read the chapter on dealing with panic attacks and lastly read the chapter on exposure therapy. Great stuff. I recommend this.

I love this book. I work with high school age children and I am going to use many of the activities with them on an individual basis. It does require that the user to be able to have reasoning skills in order to gain insigt into their behavior and feelings.

Great book. I was reading over the Christmas break and had a few family members thumb through it saying it would be a good book for them too. It’s very practical.

This is a great, and very practical, introduction to Cognitive Behavior Therapy, but one should get the latest edition (4th?) rather than the older ones. The first four chapters covering the foundation of CBT are the same, but the newer editions also contain many more techniques, including some that are based on Buddhist meditation practices. The key idea behind CBT is that “our thoughts cause our feelings” and most of the time our thoughts are generated automatically by our subconscious. The practices described in this CBT manual provide a way of relating more thoughtfully to our subconscious in a way that allows it to be more accurately perceptive of our lives. I think of this as educating our intuition! Anyway, this book has some great ideas and most, if not all of them, have been validated as effective for the treatment of a wide variety of mood disorders from depression to anxiety, phobias to procrastination. I’m telling all my friends and family to look into this book!

I deal with mental conditions every day. I was diagnosed Schizoaffective disorder- bipolar type, OCD, and borderline personality traits- but not the full disorder. It doesn’t exactly help my psychotic symptoms at all, As I’ve read in there. Writing stuff down for me doesn’t work too well but i am going to keep it and use it for my other symptoms anyways.

I love this book. It is concise , well organized, and recommended by my psycologist. It has already started helping me. It breaks things down so that you’re learning in parts not all at once. It has been the most helpful of the books I have so far.

In spite of my hesitation to admit I needed the help this book offers, I am glad I sucked it up and genuinely tried to apply its guidance to my marriage. It is surprising how we can overlook some very basic things, and what we consider obvious, others might not see at all. I think this book will improve communication for any couple, and I suggest reading this book as a preventative for some things that can creep into a relationship over time.

Still love this workbook. I got one for myself probably 10 years ago. I have bought copies for 3 family members and many friends over the years. I still use the exercises when I get worked up. Highly recommended!

This seems like it will be an invaluable tool to use with my clients. The treatment plan part tells you exactly what chapters should be reviewed for each issue and in what order. That alone is worth the price.

I like this book so much that I purchased one for each of my children. It doesn’t have any fluff to it. No stories or wordiness. You can jump to any relevant chapter and learn what you need to learn, then practice it. I love the chart at the beginning that shows the issue and the chapters that address that issue (example: anxiety).

Absolutely amazing content! Has helped me and my anxiety/panic tremendously. It’s is nice hearing facts backed by doctors and there are so many practices that have helped so much as well!
Tony DiSilvio (verified owner) –
For each feeling they give you certain chapters to correspond. My only complaint is that when you go back and choose another feeling some of your chapters are repeats! I wish they’d just make additional chapters about how those apply to the new feeling you’re working on.
But I learned a lot of great stuff in here. If you struggle with any sort of issues..anxiety, depression, anger, worry, etc then this is a good choice!

At times, folks may think it’s too late or not wanting to invest the time, to dive deep into what we feel, why and how to address issues. The book is well written and helpful. It takes courage to examine one’s thoughts and feelings. This book is excellent
