Description
Move past trauma, balance your emotions, and reconnect with your body’s innate wisdom in The Body Awareness Workbook for Trauma.
There is a piercing epidemic of trauma in the world today. Every few days there are reports of another tragedy, of more lives lost to gun violence, loved ones and family homes lost to floods, hurricanes, or fires. Women have come to speak openly about the trauma of sexual assault, and we are finally talking openly about the trauma inflicted on people of color, on transgender people, and immigrants. But now that this trauma is out in the open, how do we heal?
For years, we’ve understood the connection between trauma and mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety. But somatic psychology has recently shown that our bodies hold on to trauma, and trauma can manifest in physical symptoms, such as pain, hormone imbalance, sexual dysfunction, and addiction. In addition, we now know that developmental trauma—trauma that emerges when basic childhood needs are not met—can result in profound emotional stress and lead to serious diseases.
Building on this knowledge, this cutting-edge guide offers simple skills for connecting and calming your body, balancing your emotions, and rewiring old patterns of reactivity for better self-regulation. The mind-body approach in this book is designed to guide you away from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and trauma and toward posttraumatic growth. Using these exercises, you’ll learn how to reconnect and relate to your body—and yourself as a whole—in a new and healthy way.
If you’re ready to move past your trauma and rediscover your body’s innate capacity for healing, growth, vitality, and joy, this unique guide will help light the way.

I purchased the Body Awareness Workbook to continue to resolve my own trauma. The processes have been invaluable to improving my awareness and being kind to myself. As a body therapist for decades I have seen the physical and emotional damage of unresolved trauma. After years of learning to unconsciously “stuff it” for protection I found myself “bursting at the seams”. This is no way to live. I have been on the path of learning to feel for decades too. This book is a gift and so beautifully balanced with deep insight into “the Human Condition” from the place of Spirit, Love and Forgiveness. The lessons come on many levels. Take the time to be with each lesson in depth – have great patience and be kind with yourself. The awareness opens to you to forgiveness and love you may have withheld from judgement. I am grateful to have found this on my path of restoration and more joy. Take it on.

Julie Yau brings together seemingly impossible elements together that has helped my personal journey. In many of the books that deal with trauma or emotional healing, the author narrows into academic rhetoric (read: abstract), sterile lab-like exercises, OR mythical story telling (symbols). Julie has someone brought essential parts of all three to make the exercises very applicable and to make the change ever lasting in me. I am so excited to share this book and this work with my friends and family. LOVE, LOVE , LOVE the results from these exercises and the writing!

I recommend this book to EVERYONE, as we all have trauma that we need to process. I’m a board certified physician and recommend this to my patients.

This book is helping me to live life — without negativity, anxiety, and chaos. The grounding and breathing exercises are so helpful, I practice them consistently. The compassionate way the material is presented makes this book come alive, as though a kind guide is helping me with my myriad of challenges. I cannot afford a therapist (close to $7,500 for six months of weekly sessions, I am NOT kidding), so this kind of book is a God-sent. This is a self-help book that has it all, and is worth it. I’m so grateful the author wrote it.

Recommended to me by my therapist. If you have issues with dissociation, and emotional overwhelm, there are chapters to help deal with those. If worked through diligently, there is a lot to be gained. There are exercises for grounding, meditations. I like things that make sense, and before working through exercises, knowledge on the issue is always provided. Might be hard to work through because it goes deep, addressing not just emotions, but the avoidance parts as well. Lovely to read, do and understand.

I bought this for my partner and it was a loooong shot. He never finished a book in his whole life, but this one really sucked him into it.
He never was a spiritual kind of guy but it gave it a shot with open mind and he is now fascinated.
The book it’s easy to read and understand and I think the exercises hit him in the right places. He can feel changes in his body as he goes through them.
I am very grateful for this book because I see that it’s helping him reflect on things and build the knowledge he needed to get better.

This is the most important book I have ever experience. I have never seriously used a workbook. I followed, wrote, contemplated, wept, learned breathing techniques, reflected in safety and truly experienced profound healing. I worked the book very slowly, processing, releasing or reframining my trauma. Sometimes I would go a week or more because the experience was deep and needed time to process. Reframing was liberating. So was crying! This book can facilitate deep healing. The breathwork really helped me. I now use my favorite one daily. All the decades of talk therapy and various release techniques don’t shine a light on how I committed to the work and compassionately allowed the Author to guide me. My choice of wording, feeling and my new awareness has been life changing. You can do it. Make space in your life.
