If you loved Somatic Therapy 101 by Lizanne Douglas, you’re in for a treat with Somatic Therapy 201. The first book was a fantastic introduction, covering the basics of somatic therapy, how stress affects our bodies, and the amazing ways we can heal trauma through physical practices. It really helped bridge the gap between mind and body and set up some practical daily routines for better somatic wellness.
Now, Somatic Therapy 201 takes everything up a notch. This sequel dives deep into how somatic therapy has evolved, backing up its teachings with solid science. It introduces more advanced techniques that build on what we learned in the first book, offering a more holistic approach that ties together mind, body, and spirit.
One of the coolest things about Somatic Therapy 201 is its focus on specific traumas. It gives you targeted practices for different emotional and physical traumas, which is super helpful. Plus, it emphasizes personal growth and self-discovery, helping you really master your somatic journey.
For those of you who are professionals in the field, this book is a goldmine. It provides great tips on teaching and training others in somatic therapy and covers all the ethical stuff you need to know to practice responsibly.
The final chapter is all about the future of somatic therapy, which is both inspiring and exciting. It encourages us to stay engaged and keep exploring our somatic journeys.
In a nutshell, Somatic Therapy 201 is a must-read if you appreciated Somatic Therapy 101. It takes all the foundational concepts and expands on them beautifully, making it a perfect follow-up. Whether you’re just starting out or you’re a seasoned pro, this book will boost your knowledge and practice, and it’s definitely a worthy addition to your library.

I have read many books on somatics and I usually find them very basic and lacking real instruction. This book has taken a step up with lots of truly useful and usable information. There are many exercises given that are beyond the basics, with step by step instructions, but also leaving room to customize for each person’s needs. It also gives specifics on different issues/trauma. It’s an easy to follow and well written book to add to your library if you are wanting more advanced info on somatic exercises for healing.

As a layperson, I was intrigued by alternative therapies. I started reading this book, and I was hooked. I not only read it cover to cover to learn as much as I could but also used third-party resources to learn more.
Somatic therapy, sometimes known as body psychotherapy, is a therapeutic approach that places importance on what we experience in the mind and the body and the connection between the two. A somatic therapist helps people release damaging, pent-up emotions in their bodies by using various mind-body techniques. These can vary widely, ranging from acupressure and hypnosis to breathwork and dance.
I am a convert and recommend this book wholeheartedly.

I enjoyed the read, was not a difficult read. Used words my clients can understand for providing instructions for any of the techniques provided. A wide range of techniques provided. This a book I would recommend to new providers and clients for skill building and ease of instruction.
The reason I did not give 5 stars was the formatting. It made it difficult for me to read and find specific techniques when looking in a hurry.

This is a beautifully written book that is so comprehensive on Somatics beyond the basics (tho those are covered too). The somatic exercises are given step by step instructions that makes putting them into practice so easy. This book has it ALL! Somatic principles & theory, somatic practices and techniques, and even ethical considerations for somatic therapy. This is my new favorite somatics book!!! đź’–

This is an excellent book and very thought-provoking. Somatic therapy is a fascinating concept for treating all kinds of recovery, health issues, and emotional healing. Before acquiring this book I had no idea what somatic principles were. Now I understand a bit of the theory, practices and techniques, along with ethical considerations for somatic therapy. The material is engaging and well presented.
Magnusaxx (verified owner) –
The book promises an in-depth exploration of the mind-body connection with practical, interactive tools for self-discovery. While the book provides insightful theoretical knowledge, it wasn’t necessarily a home run, and some parts fell short of my expectations. But, overall, it’s a helpful guide.

I’ve never heard of Somatics before, so this was all new to me. The book is dense with science and ethics but built as an easily digestible text for anyone. Exercises are given in a straightforward, easy-to-follow manner with step-by-step guidance. Great for beginners.
Ulrich (verified owner) –
This book is professionally written and edited, and it is well presented and organized. Still, it was dense. As a beginner, I think I may have to find something a bit more basic. If you have any experience in this type of therapy, you might find this useful.
Joanna Case (verified owner) –
Helpful for people on this journey.
LTTcoffee38 (verified owner) –
I’ve always believed in the mind-body connection but it’s only now that I’m really getting into somatic therapy. The first few chapters provide some history and background and as newbie I can appreciate it (although it got a bit too classroom-y at times). What I liked the most were the activities. There’s A LOT and they went beyond the basics. What I’m not so fond of is that the book is more for clinicians or therapists. I STILL found it very useful on my own but I would’ve preferred that that was clear in the description.

I am new to this topic and this book really gave me a full, grounded and comprehensive view of this type of therapy. I really appreciated the reference section at the end of the book (went for a deep dive there and the rabbit hole was 3 hours long and delightful). Favorite chapter was “Best Practices for New Practitioners.” Solid book.

I really appreciated this book as an overview of somatic therapy. An enormous amount of information is presented about various modalities that makes me want to dive deeper, for example I am going to be seeking out information on Hakomi after reading the description. Valuable addition to my bookshelf as Somatic Experiencing and Focusing have made a big difference in my life so it was super interesting to read about ALL the flavors of somatic therapy. Wish the case studies were more detailed but otherwise I highly recommend the book!
Celine Raphael (verified owner) –
I really enjoyed reading this book it’s so interesting and I can’t wait to continue my read.
Cybermo (verified owner) –
What a great read! This book was easy to read, follow and interpret and the quality showed. Definitely not the AI-generated nonsense I have seen in many recent books. We need more authentic and helpful books like these that present the information where anyone can understand clearly and use on a regular basis. I was able to get the bonus exercises and you can tell the detailed quality, originality, and effort put into pulling it together. With color images of how to perform each exercise. Folks should also check their spam if they don’t get it because it can sometimes go there, which we cannot hold against the author. I look forward to a 301! Great follow up to the author’s first book!
