    Excellent resource.

This is a must-read for every clinician out there. This book reminds us just how much of our experience happens in the body and just how unattended the body can be. It is a wonderfully clear, concise and comprehensive guide to using somatic techniques in therapy that can equally benefit a seasoned or a novice clinician. The author shares her tremendously rich experience by offering very practical and concrete ways of how to guide our clients into their own body, help them become aware of inner processes, and how to make this experience safe and meaningful.

I dont have a somatic psychotherapist. I thought this would be helpful for me in giving me tools and practices to do the work on my own. It looks like a really awesome resource, but it’s written and designed for professionals and over half the worksheets are either work for the practitioner alone or dependant on the practitioner for guidance/direction. Not what I expected and not useful for me as a patient.

  4. Thatcher V. Hayward (verified owner)

Great book to use in a working practice

  5. Kris (verified owner)

    Great resource

Okay, this is NOT a self help book. It’s not a workbook to help with clients. It’s a clinician’s guide. I was not clear on that when I bought it. Just wanted to put that out there in case you’re thinking the same thing.

Somewhere I saw that this was going to revolutionize the way I practice. I couldn’t pass that up! So, I got it and read it and it was incredibly valuable, but not for the reasons that I anticipated. I thought it was going to give me new techniques to use in every session. What it did was help me to realize how it feels to be on the receiving end of therapy. The things in this book are things I do naturally because this is how I live. We see the world through our own lens. I had no idea what it was like to NOT live this way, so it’s given me new compassion for those who are so disconnected from their bodies and feelings. Great resource for that.

I absolutely love this book and would recommend it for every therapist wanting to deepen their knowledge and experience with somatic psychotherapy.

  8. Philomena (verified owner)

The book is well organized. The chapters offer useable, reasonable, and creative approaches to the topic to help people. I loved the breathing approaches for example. Thanks for writing this book.

As a therapist, a toolbox is only as useful when I can utilize the “tools” with my clients.
Unfortunately, I have become accustomed to electronic copies of content in the form of a PDF that can easily be emailed to clients and or copied for them. I have not found a PDF version of this book—I have the hard copy which means I have to physically make copies by laying the book flat on a copier. It’s not really how I want to spend my time…
I hope the publisher can also provide a PDF copy of the book–to those who purchase it, so we can actually put these wonderful exercises into practice, with more ease. Thanks!! If you can make this happen, I will change my review to 5 stars. And, if there is a PDF that I am not aware of, please let me know. I have not been able to find it yet.

As a dance/movement therapist, my training was heavily focused on integrating the physical, emotional, and mental experiences to help increase awareness and create change for my clients. I found this workbook to be a helpful refresher for similar interventions/techniques I already utilized, but also inspired me to continue to expand and be curious on how I can continue to bring the body and somatic experience into my work.

I also appreciated the way Mischke-Reeds explicitly breaks down how these interventions can be helpful in language that can be easily passed on to clients. I regularly work with clients who may be skeptical or scared to enter into their bodies, and this type of language can help create a foundation of openness and curiosity.

May not be “new” information for those who already work with the body – but I still highly recommend this as a resource for any clinician.

    Met expectations

  15. Marescho (verified owner)

Since this book did not have much material to preview I didn’t know what to expect, but took a chance since I had been to one of the author’s workshops. Lots of things to absorb and try with myself and clients.

  16. Jamie’s Reviews (verified owner)

Good book and every page more or less represents a tool a Sensorimotor Therapist are able to use

  17. Clinical Therapist (verified owner)

This book is an incredible tool to add to the way I practice. I intuitively already used a lot of skills in this book and never realized what I was doing. I’ve always had this innate understanding that the body plays such an important role in healing. No wonder people gain a ton of weight after sexual trauma, or why we feel so good after exercise, yoga, dance etc. I was trained in a somatic and attachment focused protocol for EMDR and have been so intrigued to learn more about somatic exercises to incorporate with my clients. I’m so excited to start using this material! This has been on my wishlist for a long time, go ahead and buy it! You won’t regret it.

I own a holsitc healing practice and am training in Somatic practice for trauma. I’m finding the material in this book to be most helpful for both my professional and my client use. For those that are leaving reviews about the pdf’s; THEY ARE available ! You simply have to go to the very back at the bibliography section, you will find it there.

    happy with purchase, ty.

  25. Mary L. Carroll (verified owner)

Very helpful, my counselor just refers to page rather then sending me the copied page.

  26. Brooke Elizabeth (verified owner)

Great guide for professionals or individuals. Can be used by yourself or with your therapist as a guide. Somatic Therapy is such an amazing resource to help with your Trauma, anxiety, panic attacks and depression. I am utilizing somatic therapy before I begin my EMDR.

  27. Hiking Mom (verified owner)

Update: I changed this to 4 stars because there are only a few models that use this outline model, and the exercises are still powerful. I lower rating wasn’t reflective of the value provide.

This has excellent exercises that are very relevant, and having the pdf to download and print is helpful. However, all of the exercises with outlines use male model outlines. The women I work with have expressed that they do not appreciate this, and that it makes it hard for them to relate to the exercise. I’ve found female body outlines to use, but adding female outlines to the pdf would make this more usable for working with women.

  28. Rebecca Pappas (verified owner)

This book is laid out well. I like the gradual steps towards integrating Somatic work. Therapist first, know it, experience it, settle yourself first. Just what I was looking for.

  29. ThatGuy (verified owner)

This book is full of exercises that can be used by anyone working in a therapeutic capacity, including the likes of yoga teachers and personal trainers. Whether being used as icebreakers, individual tools to help a client deepen bodily awareness, or as part of a broader curriculum on somatic work, this is a nice supplemental book.

The writing is clear and the worksheets are simple and aesthetically appealing such that they nicely balance representation of the topic/model covered with a level of open-endedness that doesn’t get in the way of the creative faculties of the facilitator or client.

I have purchased many therapy resource texts over the years. My library is extensive; however, few make it into my “great books” collection. Somatic Psychotherapy Toolbox has made it in. An absolutely superb resource for every therapists concerned with high-quality treatment of trauma.

I am a somatic healing therapist and the meditations and techniques in this book guide many of my sessions with clients that experience trauma and anxiety, or simply want to learn more about mindfulness during stressful times in their lives. I wish there was a second installment, I’d buy it today! Lots of great, practical worksheets and meditations.

  34. michart (verified owner)

Un cahier qui permet un travail au niveau intéressant.

  35. Stephen P Smith (verified owner)

This is an excellent library of somatic practices. I find issue with appropriation. I have gotten extensive training in yoga, martial arts and eastern healing modalities and many of the practices in here come from ancient wisdom and cultures. This absolutely needs to be acknowledged instead of claimed as a western therapy or modality.
