I have admired Dr. Pratt for more than 30 years and have followed his career as a therapist, subject-matter expert, educator and clinical leader. His approach to using CBT with people in distress is practical, structured and, most importantly, evidence-based. Long before medicine, mental health, and third-party payors demanded evidence-based treatment, the scientist and educator in Dr. Pratt pursued a test and learn approach to gather the data to support the development of these CBT tools.

Although I have been an Industrial/Organizational Psychologist for most of my career, in my executive coaching practice I have leveraged CBT techniques and tools to help business leaders to set practical and measurable goals (e.g., SMART goals), become more mindful, restructure their thoughts and overcome barriers to more effective and productive behaviors. As Dr. Pratt lays out clearly, when therapeutic or coaching interventions are presented in ways that people can relate to and are comfortable with, their levels of engagement and commitment increase. Taking this approach with my clients enables me to help them understand that the more you put into something, the more you get out of it.

In my work I do not ask people to change their personalities but instead encourage them to try-on and adopt a few tips and techniques to have the impact and effect they want and need to have to be successful. I have adapted a number of the tips, exercises, and worksheets in the CBT Toolbox to share with my clients positive approaches to cope with the demands of our rapidly changing world and enable them to develop the resiliency needed as they take on new roles, face new challenges, and grow in their careers. The activities and tools that Dr. Pratt provides are easily adapted for an adult and non-clinical population. The CBT Toolbox itself is an easy to use workbook that therapists, clinicians, coaches, counselors, etc. can quickly find an exercise or tool or homework assignment. And because everything leads back to observable behavior and measurable change, these tools help me to meet my clients’ expectations to be able to demonstrate ROI and results assurance.

Chapter One lays out Keys to Successful CBT. It also makes clear that a cook book approach or wholesale adoption of the CBT Toolbox is a recipe for failure. It does however reinforce how to best help your clients be successful. I have found the chapters on goal setting, mindfulness, behavioral activation, cognitive processing and restructuring, and social skills training particularly useful. I highly recommend the CBT Toolbox!

The CBT Toolbox is an excellent resource for therapists, school counselors, teachers and parents. Dr. Pratt walks us through connecting with kids, helping them engage in treatment, identifying distressing thoughts, feeling and situations and gives us practical solutions. Both the causes for distress and the treatments are explained at a level that everyone can understand. The handouts are clear and can be put to use right away. I highly recommend this book for seasoned clinicians, school counselors as well as students new to working with children.

Dr. Pratt’s book is a comprehensive analysis of anxiety and depression in this age group. His SMART Goals, Client as investigator, and work sheets make this a practical guide for direct client involvement in successfully coming to terms with his/her issues. His direction for parent involvement is an essential part of the workbook.

CBT at times becomes too cognitive an approach for this age group. Dr. Pratt, however, balances his interventions with a true understanding of the interrelationship of feelings and thinking. His positive approach reinforces the strengths of the child/adolescent and through his “homework type” assignments makes a comfortable fit for these clients.

The Therapist’s Skills Section allows one to take the instructions in this tool kit and develop one’s own insights to a new level by assisting the therapist in how each exercise displays a level of reflection and understanding.

My 11 year old daughter has anxiety and falls on the spectrum. Her therapist asked me to buy her this book for her sessions. I was skeptical at first but the improvements are noticeable and she loves it. When she feels her self getting any negative feelings she reaches right for it and she is now getting a better understanding not only on her own feelings but of those around her too . Worth every penny !

Dr. Pratt has written and excellent resource on CBT to assist therapists in working with children and adolescents dealing with anxiety, depression, and suicidal impulses. This Tool book provides easy to understand CBT guidelines and therapist tips, as well as many worksheets therapists can use to help their clients. The workbook also includes a section to encourage parent involvement in their Child’s treatment. I highly recommend this resource from Dr. Pratt.

I am very impressed! This is my favorite of the series so far. I am learning so much and found it so inspiring that I immediately wanted to use it. It is very structured and designed meticulously for order and building skills concretely. Authors, please do one for self esteem. I will definitely buy it. You cannot put a price on spiral binding, either. Well, you can, literally, but the value is far higher!
