“Heal Your Nervous System” provides a 5-step program to help your nervous system shift back into relaxed states and become more resilient. There wasn’t much science in the book beyond talking about the different states of the nervous system, from relaxed to fight/flight/freeze states. The author did refer to some studies about how different actions can help you change how you react to stress and be able to handle more stress.
She started by talking about signs of nervous system dysregulation (including a quiz to indicate where you are on the scale) and factors that affect how your nervous system responds to stressors and trauma (like how sensitive you are, genetics, childhood safety levels, and bonding to your caregivers). She then covered each step in a 5 stage program. She suggested small actions or contemplations that take 5-15 minutes She stated you shouldn’t make too many changes at once, and many of the activities fit into daily life rather than being things you need to find time to do. The 5 steps involve learning awareness of your reactions, regulating your nervous system, restoration of healthy patterns, connecting with others, and expanding your capacity to handle stress. At the end, she told more of her story and how Buddhism influenced her life (and her program). Overall, I felt like she had helpful advice.

Pro: The book has a nice cover and did start out well. Have steps that you can follow and a test that you can give yourself to see how “messed up” your nervous system is through a point system
Con: Too technical and the reading, for me, feels dry and uninteresting. The book is thick and due to technical jargon, I found my mind drifting off instead of being engaged. I had to force myself to try to read through the chapters as I really do want to benefit from healing journey. But I find the book hard to read and stay interested unless you’re into health words and science, which I am not too particularly fond of. So I would only recommend this to someone who is more into medical jargons.

I think that we currently don’t even think about our nervous system when we think about our whole health and the nervous system is where it all starts – it innervates every part of our body. What I love most about this book is the fact that she explains her life story and shows you the benefits to being a sensitive person. It isn’t all doom and gloom like society likes to paint. I haven’t put the plan into action yet (I will come up with my own plan on a second, more critical read through), but I have finally finished the book.
I like that the author does share a glimpse of her own experiences. I like that there is more than just a clinical recommendation – the parallels are drawn and shown how this has helped her. While I recognize that everyone will have a different outcome and take away different things, I really appreciated that it wasn’t just based on what she has observed clinically – it has impacted her life as well.
There are several pages of research citations (recent and older) which I have yet to dive into myself, but I love there are so many references and upon a quick gloss over, seem to be most if not all credible sources with name recognition.
Interesting read – but heavy, so much information to take in, will take me a few reads to really get everything. I’d recommend for anyone who has become interested in nervous system dysregulation (I first heard of the topic from my Calm app) whether to implement for themselves or just learn more about the topic in general. It gives you a lot of tips on things to implement and really lay out a blueprint on what you can do, as well as in depth tell you what it is and things you may be going through if you possibly have a dysregulated nervous system.

I first found Dr. Linnea’s work on Instagram and started learning more about nervous system regulation before this book came out and I am glad to have this book as reference at home. My favorite part of this book and her program is that there are small things you can do every day to help shift patterns and regulate your nervous system like somatic exercises that are simple to do.
These exercises and practices along with the 5 stages has given me a guide and helped me be more patient with myself as I manage my nervous system. The “Do This” section of the chapters are a helpful way to summarize the learnings into simple action steps. After practicing and learning for only 8 weeks with Dr. Linnea and HYNS, I feel a significant shift in my nervous system’s ability to go from a stressed out place to more calm. This a very welcome shift after being in a chronic state of anxiety and worry for so many years. I finally feel some ease.

I’m finally understanding why my mind and body are so out of whack. I have realized that I have Sensory Processing Disorder. Plus I am a highly sensitive person and an Empath. I have suffered severe losses, my brother took his life, his son and my nephew passed away two years ago and my son (15) took his life March 10, 2023. Losing my son has torn my heart to pieces. All this loss plus my nervous system sensitivities has made me feel mentally and physically exhausted.
This book is amazing. I took the test to evaluate my level of nervous system dysfunction. The high level starts at 67 and I scored a 91, yep I got issues. I think so many people are stuck in Fight or Flight and anxiety is through the roof. I know I am. We are not only grieving for our son, but we have PTSD from finding him with a gunshot wound to his head. I have read several books on losing a child and they helped me. This book though gets into what is happening in your body and mind and has exercises to normalize and calm your nervous system. This book is a gem!!!
