Description

You really CAN change your brain without medication.

Maybe you’ve struggled for years with anxiety, depression, ADHD, migraines, PTSD, obsessive thinking, sleep issues or other unwanted conditions. You’ve tried medication, psychotherapy, breathing techniques, yoga, exercise or dietary changes—with no permanent relief.

Neurofeedback is an emerging technology that’s helped thousands of people feel better—without medication. It allows you to gently nudge your brain along through training until it learns to operate in a healthier manner.

Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback that’s like a gym for your brain. The training improves your brain’s timing which, in turn, improves its functioning. When your brain works better, you feel better. It’s like heavy-duty weight training for the brain, even though you do it while relaxing in a chair.

Once you’ve done sufficient training, these improvements are often long-term.

Neurofeedback 101 explains how you change your brain–in clear, simple terms. It’s full of real cases of how training has helped children and adults with their symptoms. There’s a section that offers a thorough discussion of important questions and issues about neurofeedback – designed both for professionals and consumers.

Author Michael P. Cohen is Director and Chief of Neurotechnology at the Center for Brain Training in Jupiter, Florida, one of the largest neurofeedback practices in South Florida. He’s specialized in neurofeedback and helping individuals improve their brain function since 1996. He’s taught more than 2,500 health professionals how to utilize neurofeedback in a clinical practice.

If you want to explore how the brain can rewire and retrain itself, Neurofeedback 101 will give you the answers and resources you need.

Please note: This book is NOT a manual or textbook on how to conduct neurofeedback. It provides general information on what neurofeedback is, how it works, and what neurofeedback can do. Those wishing to learn how to do neurofeedback should seek out books designed for that purpose.

This book is different from other neurofeedback books. It is for clients who are seeking the last resort, who are curious about how the neurofeedback will work, who are skeptical about the neurofeedback, and also for neurofeedback providers who are asked a lot of questions from those clients. I am a clinical psychologist doing brain researches who started to learn neurofeedback training. As a researcher, I thought that I knew how the neurofeedback works and what we can expect from the training. However, knowing, understanding, and explaining are all different things. I “knew” but I did not fully understand and failed to explain it to my clients, other health care providers, and co-workers (researchers).
In this book, Michael Cohen described his training experience as a neurofeedback provider, or a brain gym trainer, with powerful lessons and tools gleaned from his lifelong passion for learning, to guide clients and clinicians. The words are simple but not too simple. Lots of examples and metaphors with his humor will give you aha experiences, or eureka moments. This book will allow clients and neurofeedback providers to begin neurofeedback journeys with more confidence because almost all the questions that you will have before beginning neurofeedback training are addressed in this book. Before going to workshops, buying expensive equipment, and paying for consultations, read this book.

Finally someone ( Mr. Cohen) has taken on the task of explaining the basis of neurofeedback in a very clear and understandable way. He explains why it works. how it works and the impact it has on many challenging conditions. I am a Mental Health Counselor and always look for ways to help my clients and be able to suggest non-invasive approaches versus going straight to pharmaceuticals..
I love that this book is divided in 3 different parts ( what is neurofeedback, case studies and general questions) and you can read the book starting any section. The case studies are not only interesting they really help you to understand the impact of neurofeedback on people’s lives. He has an ability to explain brain functioning ( finding patterns and self-regulation) and uses easy to understand comparisons of brain functioning in every day life (e.g.
mother on playground). The “question ” section , the last part of the book, is a great way to help manage expectations for anyone wanting to try neurofeedback. He is realistic about amount of sessions ,what factors can influence how many sessions each individual needs and use of substance and/or prescription drugs while doing neurofeedback. I can see this book be the companion and “go to” for every neurofeedback practitioner.

This book is written in such a way that people who don’t know anything about neurofeedback will get it. The author writes in an engaging manner, using language people can understand. The chapter on case examples demonstrates the power of neurofeedback by showing actual examples of how neurofeedback has impacted people’s lives.

I’m going to suggest to potential neurofeedback clients that they read this book to help them decide whether to go forward with training or not. I’m going to ask my current neurofeedback clients to read it because the more they understand, the better their neurofeedback training will work. And I’m going to ask all the neurofeedback practitioners I mentor to read it, too. There’s a lot of good information in the book for both the general public and the professionals.

Mike’s book Neurofeedback 101 is written in a way that my clients can easily learn about what Neurofeedback is, how it works and who can be helped by it; I have yet to find another book that has been able to do this as effectively for the average person. The case examples are engaging and you can feel Mike’s passion for utilizing Neurofeedback as a therapeutic mode for his clients. I have already recommended this book to several of my clients!

Neurofeedback 101 is a must read for any clinician or client considering neurofeedback. Mike has a way of helping you easily understand the ins and outs of the neurofeedback process providing a lot of examples as well as case studies to support the efficacy of this treatment. If you’re looking for a dry, scholarly, and heavy-handed examination of this subject, prepare for disappointment. Instead, you’ll find an approachable, clearly written, and easily digestible treatment of neurofeedback. Best of all, the book doesn’t talk down to readers or gloss over important issues. The book makes great use of case studies to provide clarity and illustrate the author’s key points. The writing is refreshingly conversational and easy to follow. Get ready to learn the key principles and potential of neurofeedback from an expert who clearly knows his stuff.

Michael Cohen took his years of experience and broke it down so that beginners can have a good understanding of what their brains could do with the help of neurofeedback. “Neurofeedback tells your brain what it is doing” , we give it lots of “practice practice, practice”, and we “watch the brain change itself”. What brains can do when they are given information! He describes how brain circuitry changes during training to improve brain performance affecting “attention, processing, managing mood, making decisions, language, memory and far more”. He has had years of experience of training many clients with a variety of symptoms on various neurofeedback systems. His way of explaining neurofeedback, which can be very technical, is straightforward and easy to understand. His many case examples demonstrate his experience and how neurofeedback has been helpful to clients in his practice. He does not overstate but is clear in his responses to questions people often have when learning about neurofeedback.
I really liked the organization of this book allowing people to get the main points, peruse case examples, look up questions they might have. Michael Cohen was generous in offering this book to us, and I for one am grateful!

Neurofeedback 101 is a wonderful resource for folks in the helping professions, whether a Neurofeedback provider, one considering adding this to their approaches, or simply gaining knowledge to make informed referrals. It describes the science, process, and benefits from a point of experience as well as current research in the field of applied neuroscience. A must have for your resource shelf!

I have been looking for a book just like this for a very long time. I am a Neurofeedback practitioner and when people call and inquire to get more information about what Neurofeedback is, I have long recommended going to Michael Cohen’s Center for Brain Training Site, his videos are excellent and informative for all levels of viewers. This book is even better: concise, clear, explains the main concepts n a way that is understandable and accessible to a wide variety of ages and levels of sophistication. Versatile, user friendly and quick. Perfect to recommend to people for a short course on what this is and how it works. Highly recommend it!

Having worked in the field of neurofeedback for over a decade, I can say it is very difficult to distill down complex technical information into comprehensible and useful explanations for the layperson. Michael has done it very well. Bravo.

I have searched for many years for a book that would explain the benefits, uses and importance of Neurofeedback. I have finally found the book that I have been looking for in Neurofeedback 101 written by Michael Cohen. It is an easy and interesting read that I can recommend to my patients who wish to learn more about Neurofeedback. Neurofeedback is a fascinating way to improve brain function and I have used it to transform the lives of myself and my family members. Better brain function leads to better decisions , which leads to better and happier lives.

I thought I knew a fair bit about neurofeedback — one of my good friends is a neurofeedback practitioner after all. This book surprised me — it’s organized so simply and so well that the reader can’t help but come away with a comprehensive view of what neurofeedback is, how it works, and for what conditions. It filled in gaps in my knowledge I didn’t know I had.

Even better, Neurofeedback 101 is a real pleasure to read. Every explanation is accompanied by an actual case study. These real-life anecdotes were fascinating. People of all ages and lifestyles are presented, with a variety of issues: Anxiety, depression, ADHD, sleep disorders, mental focus and more.

What’s especially refreshing is Mr. Cohen’s honesty. Not every case works out easily like a TV show. He seems to take great care to present where difficulties ensued that required new strategies.

The great promise of neurofeedback is that this therapy tackles pervasive health problems without drugs. For many who are caught in the cycle of ever-decreasing effectiveness of their meds while dealing with unpleasant side effects, neurofeedback can almost seem like a miracle treatment.

I suspect medical professionals are going to want to read this comprehensive yet down-to-earth book, to discover where they might be able to help their own patients who are stuck in a perpetual loop on a particular issue. The extensive Q&A finale alone will inspire neurofeedback practitioners to hand Neurofeedback 101 to their clients.

Succinct, engaging, direct — this is well worth the purchase. It wouldn’t surprise me if Neurofeedback 101 became the neurofeedback go-to reference for years to come.

I’ve done a lot of research regarding neurofeedback since I had the treatment done now years ago and this book brought so much clarity. Very easy read that even gave me a few good laughs. I definitely recommend this for anyone seeking information as well as a tool when recommending neurofeedback to friends and family.

Highly recommend this book! Neurofeedback can be a very complex and difficult to understand topic. Mike Cohen’s book helps break it down simply so anyone can understand. I am a parent of 2 adopted children and had neurofeedback recommended to me to help them both. Neurofeedback can be quite confusing to the lay person, and this book helps you to wrap your brain around what it is, how it works and how you can benefit from it. Mike has used his years of experience in providing neurofeedback as well as his teaching and put together a book for all to read and have a better grasp of neurofeedback! Thank you!!!

Being an Integrative Psychologist and a Neuroscientist who has been utilizing Neurofeedback in her practice for 10 years, Michael Cohen has been a significant mentor for me. He is a master at explaining difficult concepts well, and this book is a huge HUGE gift for all of us.
In fact, I liked the book so much that I ordered 50 copies to be able to give one to each of my patients when they start Neurofeedback here at Healthy Within in San Diego! My books just arrived today and I cannot wait to start giving them to my patients!!
We needed this book years ago and I thank you Michael Cohen for being such a positive force in our field and a visionary for us. I also thank you for creating such a great resource for us practitioners. Patients who come for Neurofeedback always have the questions you answer so clearly in your book.
Wonderful resource if you are sick and tired of the negative effects of psychiatric medications!

This is a great book and did a good job of making the process clear for the lay person.

For the author – something happened before you published and there is an extra blank page between pages 22 and 23. This means that for the entire rest of the book, the page numbers are buried next to the spine, and all the chapters start on the left-hand page when I’m pretty sure your intent was for them to start on the right-hand page. It doesn’t impact the content, but is a bit annoying. Super easy fix, though, and I completely understand how easy it is to have this happen. Sometimes these things just show up after you upload a perfectly clean and correct document to KDP and the first time you see them is in the digital (or print) review!

There are so very few non-fictional books that can hold a persons interest
like Michael Cohen’s Neurofeedback 101. It is one of those rare books you will not put down before it is completely read. He makes Neurofeedback so easy to understand. Neurofeedback is the Healing Art of the Future that is already here today! The book contains many fantastic Testimonies of people healed from a number of debilitating problems that had plagued them for years. The book is easy to read and provides excellent understanding of Neurofeedback.

    Deal Mike,

Please file this message with your official fan mail because I am loving NEUROFEEDBACK 101! Congratulations on producing a straightforward and accessible overview of the field.

I don’t know how you managed it but your language and examples are right in the sweet spot of what most beginners can understand. And that holds true for clinicians as well as laypeople. Thank you for taking the time and energy to produce your book, and for signing my personal copy. That just makes it extra special.

Great book! I’ve heard little of neurofeedback and thought this would be the book to read to help with anxiety. This book is a good introduction to the field, only wish there was a little more detail.

I have adhd and have had seizures in the past and am in the process of exploring neurofeedback to improve some cognitive functions. Having met Michael Cohen, I can tell that he is very passionate and Knowledgeable about the space and I hope others can benefit from this type of “gym” membership for the brain.

The jury is out on his practices. I have been in to see him many times after a stroke, recently returned because, as fellow sufferers know, we will try anything to recover! I will start a new treatment soon but so far the results are uneven. I have tried hyperbaric chamber and balance therapy. I read, I research, I ask everyone how do we recover after a stroke!? Mike is convincing so I will return…and read the book! Good luck to us all!
