All parents want to provide for their child and protect them. As an educational leader for over twenty years, I believe Eileen Kennedy Moore has it right in helping parents understand that the best gift they can give their child is life experiences where they build determination, resilience, and humility. From these hard-won mindset ‘muscles’ comes true self-esteem. Kid Confidence: Help Your Child Make Friends, Build Resilience, and Develop Real Self-Esteem provides not only a scientific and field-tested information to help us understand this truth but also practical tools for parents as they raise their child to be the confident, determined adult they are meant to be.
There are no shortcuts to becoming a confident, determined adult. Self-esteem isn’t something parents can give to a child through praise or propping up in school, sports, the arts, or friendships. As Eileen Kennedy Moore points out in Kid Confidence: Help Your Child Make Friends, Build Resilience, and Develop Real Self-Esteem, and those of us with years of experience in education know empirically and from research, the real gift parents can provide that leads to self-esteem is time and space to live through their own experiences so self-reliance, grit, and confidence blossom naturally. Kuddos to Dr. Kennedy Moore for explaining this truth so clearly and passionately and providing the practical tools for parents to wean themselves from ineffective and often damaging interventions in hopes of building self-esteem.
Every generation of parents has its own unique challenges. Current parenting norms, described by the often-heard phrases of ‘helicopter or drone parenting,’ include best intentions gone awry through meddling with a child’s ability to build her own self-esteem. As Eileen Kennedy Moore articulates in Kid Confidence: Help Your Child Make Friends, Build Resilience, and Develop Real Self-Esteem, the true gift a parent can give is the opportunity for their child to gain the life experiences, skinned knees and bruised egos included, that authentically develop inner confidence and resilience. Dr. Kennedy Moore provides practical advice on how parents can positively impact self-esteem.

I love this book! My teen has had low self-esteem since he was little. I never thought about how much of it is related to how he puts so much of the focus on himself–in everything–until I read this book! All of the advice parents learned in the 80s and 90s to pump up your kids at every turn (i.e., trophies for everyone)–doesn’t work. What does work is getting kids to turn the focus from themselves to other things that I learned from this book. One of my favorite lines is that real self-esteem is, “Letting go of the question ‘Am I good enough?'” That’s groundbreaking advice right there. Also, like all of her other books, Dr. Kennedy-Moore includes a ton of spot-on research to back up her practical advice that any parent can use for a child struggling with low self-esteem. It makes me feel good when I follow that advice that so much thought went into a book like this–I couldn’t find anything like this before and I’m a stickler for research in parenting/nonfiction books. While I read the book in its entirety, I also love that it’s broken up into easy-to-follow chapters that you can use as a constant reference. I’ve already gone back to parts to re-read and used the advice since I read it the first time. As I mentioned before, I really do love this book!

This book is helping me help my sixteen year old granddaughter with questions she’s asking me about her need to understand what’s happening to her during this confusing time of life. I’m so proud she asks so many questions and it’s Eileen Kennedy-Moore’s book “Kid Confidence” that is providing me solid options for sincere answers. I don’t want my granddaughter to think, “sure, she’s my baba, no wonder she thinks I’m terrific”. Dr Kennedy-Moore provides a practical guide and one that seems to be satisfying this young granddaughter. As evidence, she keeps coming back with more questions. So I keep reading and thinking through ways to support her.
Her mom and dad received this as a gift from me and it’s one of the best gifts I could give them with two teenagers.
Page 114 is exactly what they’ve seen their one of their daughters do a couple years ago when she was being overly perfectionist and frustrated . Imagine having answers on how to handle this difficult situation at the time.
My son’s daughter is 4 years old. He and his wife deserve their own copy as it can be read now for some cute answers to why she loves herself so much but they’ll also be ready for what’s yet to come!
It’s a bible on childrearing. Wish I had this when raising my two children but I have it now to help them with theirs!

This information packed book presents material in an easy-to-understand way and was so full of tips, I had to get a pack of page stickies to mark as a I went along–and that was just in the first few chapters. Excellent resource. Thank you!

Easy read, useful parenting tips and senerios that you can apply with your children. Helping with my twin boys and choosing my words more wisely to help build them up. And have them build confidence independently as well

I love Paris and recently stumbled upon the author’s first book, Lessons from Madame Chic, an entrancing account of her time in the City of Light as a foreign exchange student. She self-published that very successful memoir and has gone on to develop a cottage industry of sorts with her subsequent books and online presence, a feat I hope to duplicate as I write my first memoir.
I also love the colorfully chic illustrations that characterize her covers, and that’s what drew me to her latest, CONNOISSEUR KIDS.
It’s an urbane guide to raising well-behaved children and one I’d love to give to every parent in the restaurant attached to our fave Starbucks. Each night, toddlers are let loose to run free in the connecting public space, yelling and doing gymnastics on nearby chairs and tables. When asked politely to mind their progeny, parents look aghast, as if one is asking them to effect world peace. All we really want is peace in our little realm as we quietly talk and sip our lattes. Is that too much to ask?
Not if Jennifer is successful with her latest foray into cosmopolitan good manners. I for one pray she succeeds, and will be singing her praises and that of this charming work. God bless you, Ms. Scott! 5/5

I love this book and I plan to use it as part of our homeschool starting tomorrow! It is divided into short ‘lessons’ that are simple, thorough, and engaging. Each topic has a fun sounding activity after it to solidify the information. I appreciate this simplicity and fun as I have 4 very young kids to keep interested. I have learned so much from Jennifer’s other amazing books, time to teach my kids too : )

Beautifully written. My kids are really enjoying reading this together. My 10 year old son is asking for his own copy. Thank you Jennifer.

This is a timely book that clearly and succinctly guides children (and adults!) in good manners and explains etiquette in a fun way. There are easy games to play to reinforce what is being taught, such as “look a person in the eyes when talking with them.” Jennifer is a kind life coach in areas such as communication, hygiene, and manners, to name a few. I think parents and children will enjoy reading and playing the games together. She also lists many alternative ideas to having screen time as one’s default mode! I hope many people purchase and utilize this excellent book.

I have been a big Madame Chic fan for years. Jennifer Scott has written a great book on manners for kids. I would have loved this when I was 10 or 11. I think it’s a bit over the head of my six-year-old son. But it’s a great, fun resource. She has good object lessons and games for teaching some more grown-up concepts.
Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I don’t even have children, but I’m a huge fan of Jennifer’s and love her blog and was curious as to what she would teach kids. I learned a couple of things, and wish I had learned this etiquette when I was young. Great book for families and any kid. I think this book will help to raise responsible young gentlemen and ladies.

Have been enjoying reading to my children. We go over a couple new manners a day and practice in her fun suggestions. Love the interaction!

LOVE this book (plus it’s so cute) My 6 year old loves reading the short stories on etiquette and playing the manners games is great family fun! A very practical and informative and well written book!!!!

Jennifer L. Scott’s messages of poise and etiquette aimed at adults appeal to me, so I was quite curious to see her approach to helping children to gain these qualities that are increasingly less common place in today’s world.
Reading this guide for parents and their children brought back memories of childhood lessons and I found an appreciation for the range of topics and the different approaches that are suggested. While some of the approaches may work better than others, depending on individual personalities, the ideas that are presented are well worth considering.
As someone with several decades of experience as an aunt, and a great aunt in more recent years, this is a book I would recommend for those with or without children. Written in a manner that is suitable for children who read at an intermediate level or above, as well as for reading as a family, there is value here for those who are not parents but whose relationships with children may enable them to be a role model.

A friend gave me this book as a gift, and similar to as when the same friend gave me another by this author, I wondered if she had lost her mind. I have young children and ‘connoisseur’ is definitely not the word that comes to mind when I think about life with young children. But, as I always say, I give every book a chance because I think you can learn from anyone’s story. There is always something of worth to be learned. I see this book for being best for kids in perhaps their early teens or preteens. It teaches some good lessons for adults and children alike.
Some of the most noteworthy things I got from this book follow…
The antidote (or solution) to selfishness is thoughtfulness. Thoughtfulness and serving others doesn’t come naturally and can often be the hardest choice to make. It’s easier just to be selfish and fulfill our own wants first.
The spell your name exercise would kick my butt.
The section on using kind words seems especially necessary these days. All people, not just kids, need to learn about how to counteract mean words with kind words and that gossip is speaking negatively about people when they are not there to defend themselves. Perhaps there should be an adult version of this book!
And, the final lesson of the book is one of the most needed in this day and age. It talks about the importance of laughter. We all need more laughter and fun in our lives. Let’s try not to take ourselves too seriously and learn once again how to laugh and have fun.

I have been using this book for the last couple of months, due to my psychologist retiring and the other psychologists too full to take in new patients. In this time, the book has helped me acknowledge several of my failings, while also showing me ways towards improvement. Since then, I’ve improved on several aspects of my personality, learning to understand my emotions, where they come from, and how to approach situations in a overall more calm manner.
While this book can be worked on without professional help, I would highly recommend that you use this book with your therapist/psychologist/psychiatrist. While the exercises in the book can be done by yourself, the book itself mentions that you should discuss what you wrote with a licensed professional( I agree completely; This book helped reach the roots of my problem, and had I shown the book and the answers to my psychologist, I could have more easily improved myself). Either way, the book is excellent and I highly recommend it.

This is such a cute book for kids! I’ve followed Jennifer on YouTube for quite awhile and was intrigued by this book. I decided to order it to use as part of our “morning basket” time for our homeschool and we’ve all really enjoyed it! I have a 6 year old boy & 4 year old girl. Jennifer covers all sorts of important topics regarding basic etiquette in a way that’s fun for kids. I’d highly recommend!

I bought this book for our homeschool year as part of our morning time. I love all of Jennifer L Scott’s books and her YouTube channel. But this book is so well written and organized and is highly useful
To teach children manners and etiquette as well as why we eat healthy things and how they help our bodies. It’s not just a “here’s what to do” but also the why. My kids and I enjoy reading this together each morning!
Erhi (verified owner) –
For most of us modern parents, etiquette and manners are not something we stress to our kids, or are often too busy to remember to teach. This is a great way to get kids interested in the topic. Probably best for age 6/7 and up.

I love this book! I almost never finish books because I get so bored with the fluff that is included in the writing. The writers provide the information concisely and do not restate it in multiple ways. They provide great examples of how clinicians can best help their client and they do it in an organized way that makes sense and is easy to retain.

This is truly a wonderful resource. I love it for its accessibility. It packs a wealth of information in a really easy-to-access way. Worksheets are straight forward. Explanations are straight-forward. Brilliant and excellent. Honestly, the best book I’ve found besides Judith Beck’s text. All other texts are just meh. I feel confident doing CBT using this resource.

I have four kids ages 5-11 and they all LOVE this book. They love the activities especially. We just finished the tongue twisters activity, which was a lot of fun. I am pleasantly surprised at how much they look forward to reading a book on manners.

Or it should be required reading for every child and parents of children. Bringing grace and manners back to our culture that has forgotten how. Besides that it’s such a fun book too! I would have delighted in reading this when I was a child. I still did as a grandma.

I’ve just began reading the book and I’ve gotta say that I love how organized and thoroughly put this book is. I’m a Grad student in Social Work and started seeing clients and this book is definitely a great tool to have! We’re learning more about the CBT model and it’s nice to have something I can refer to so I can be prepared for sessions. If you’re new to the clinician profession this is a MUST HAVE!

I love how the authors break down how to use CBT for a variety of diagnoses. This has been both helpful for me as a new clinician and it has helped my clients as well. I wish that they made a book like this for children and adolescents. Until they do I just break it down in a kid friendly way.

I took this workbook with me to my therapy appointment and she was happy to work with me and the book. Cbt and Dbt are so beneficial to practice and learn the techniques to take back my life in a more manageable way. I know my mental and behavioral issues are a work in progress, but with the guide of this book and my therapy. I have confidence I’ll be more successful in my healing journey.
Highly recommend!
Only kind note I would have is, to have an area where you can write notes in the book after each chapter.
