Description
Traumatic life experiences can be devastating and they inevitably shape who you are. Such events can also become a powerful force that awakens you to an undercurrent of your own aliveness. Trauma recovery involves learning to trust in your capacity for new growth. In order to grow, we must make use of our suffering in order to find our happiness.
Within these pages, you will find an invitation to see yourself as the hero or heroine of your own life journey. A hero’s journey involves walking into the darkness on a quest for wholeness. This interactive format calls for journaling and self-reflection, with practices that guide you beyond the pain of your past and help you discover a sense of meaning and purpose in your life. Successful navigation of a hero’s journey provides opportunities to discover that you are more powerful than you had previously realized.
Written by Dr. Arielle Schwartz, bestselling author of The Complex PTSD Workbook, this healing guide provides a step-by-step approach to trauma recovery that integrates:
– Mindfulness & yoga
– Somatic psychology

I thought I had done most of the healing work I needed to do. I had moved on. I even have a good relationship now with the first abuser, after they apologized. I left two subsequent abusive relationships and learned that I need to be very careful of who I allow into my life, because sometimes abuse feels like love to me.But when I read this book, I realize how many other, smaller things about me are tied to the childhood trauma. I cried. But it made me understand so much more about my life and how I cope. This is a truly useful, supportive book for those of us with complex PTSD from trauma.

An extraordinary guide through the non-linear process of trauma recovery, written with the wisdom of a deep, compassionate, skillful Teacher and Therapist. This is a book to be savoured and worked with slowly, in sections over time, alone or explored in therapy. For those just beginning, the first two Chapters are a remarkably gentle introduction to the terrain of trauma and healing, of therapy and resilience. The mid-section explores the ‘heavy lifting’ of trauma work, best supported by a secure therapeutic relationship. The final two chapters weave together the extraordinary gifts of transformation inviting us to explore the deepest meaning-making that is so often the ‘silver lining’ of recovery. I recommend this book wholeheartedly to laypersons, clients, and Clinicians – both seasoned and emerging. A gift for all of us. – The Trauma Project

This book provides a roadmap to healing and setting ourselves free from the wounds of the past. Dr, Schwartz spells out so clearly, and with such compassion, the effects of childhood trauma and tools for healing. Every couch and every leader needs to read this book as it is the foundation for understanding human potential and what holds so many people back. This book offers a wealth of knowledge and tools to promote healing both in the body and the mind. I never travel without it and find myself recommending it more than any other book I have read. If you struggle with anxiety, depression, addiction or any mental health disorder, the tools offered in this book will be transformational regardless of what stage of the healing process you are in. Thank you Dr. Schwarts!

I’ve been using this book until I can get a stable therapist and it’s helped immensely. The perspectives the author gives are amazing and I love that there is space to reflect after each chapter. It’s beginner friendly to someone going down the self-help road but I could also see it being a conversation starter when working with someone else. All in all it’s a great resource!

I had the pleasure of serendipitously meeting Arielle and her family in 2018 when we were a part of the same Inca Trail hike. At the time I was struggling with validating my young son’s experience of living at two houses. Despite being on vacation, she received me warmly and shared her experiences as both a therapist and a child of divorced parents. I connected with her on Facebook and the gifts she shares on there continued to help me through difficult times. This past November I began therapy again as my parents divorced (after 35 years), a new baby and my perfectionism and anxiety reaching unseen new peaks. I bought this book as an accompaniment to the work I was doing weekly in therapy. It has been so helpful and is as gracious, warm and compassionate as Arielle is in real life. The journal prompts are incredibly helpful as someone who has never had any clue how to journal. I’ve now been able to start journaling in a wholehearted and meaningful way. The sections are short, impactful and manageable which is wonderful as another of two young boys – I can dive into this for a short bit and feel myself work on healing my past wounds without feeling like I have to carve out lots of time. The heroine’s story prompts are probably my favorite as it really gave me vocabulary to express new skills I have learned. Her definition of trauma is one I carry with me daily interpersonally as a mother, wife, person, teacher and towards myself and allows me to meet others and myself with compassion where there has been a lot of criticism. In our house Brene Brown and Arielle Schwartz are our adopted family members who we reference often. Do not hesitate to purchase this book or wonder if you’ve had enough trauma or too much to benefit – this book is for healing all of us.

Helpful for survivors of trauma who are still suffering from triggers, anxiety, guilt, and shame. Encourages authentic reflection of long held beliefs. Requires personal commitment to question the true causes of thinking and acting.

I’ve done extensive research and reading over the last decade regarding trauma and healing. This is one of the best books written for the topic with the most practical approaches, experiences/applications, and advice. Arielle Schwartz, PhD is wonderful to listen to (I’ve attended two conferences where she remained a top speaker), and someone that knows how to walk this journey WITH a survivor in her book.

My therapist recommended the book soon after it came out and I cannot say enough good about it. I have been reading this alongside EMDR therapy and it has been such a great tool. The author has many resources for a person to utilize, complimenting resources that my therapist has taught me, and the book has helped me to solidify which ones works best for me in my practice. I can read it in small chunks and share with my therapist weekly what stood out.

This is a clear concise self help book. It is a fantastic companion to a Theraputic relationship, offering homework that probably isn’t being assigned, but a thinking compendium to help sort through the thoughts, feelings & sensations brought up in therapy . It helps one delve deeper to gain a greater understanding of their journey, building on the Theraputic process. It opens areas of contemplation for further therapy sessions and growth.
