In this book internationally renowned ADHD expert Dr. Russell Barkley explains the science behind ADHD and how you can tell if your spouse, partner, friend, adult child, or sibling may have it.Dr. Barkley shows how to guide your loved one toward the right treatment, and what to do if they don’t want treatment.
ADHD doesn’t just affect kids — adults can have it too. This will come as no surprise if you are close to an adult who has problems with attention, concentration, distractibility, impulsiveness, forgetfulness, or self-control (or all of these symptoms). The good news is that with effective treatment your loved one with ADHD can have a happier, more successful life and a stronger, closer relationship with you and others.
Adults with ADHD can be successful, achieve their goals, and live out big dreams—and you can help. You can set boundaries to manage your own emotional and financial stress, too. In When an Adult You Love Has ADHD you will learn practical steps for helping your loved one accept and manage their disorder, and pursue paths in life where ADHD might not pose such a big problem.
Dr. Barkley shows how to guide your loved one toward the right treatment and, using real-life examples, answers questions such as:
- What health risks does ADHD impose on those who have it?
- Why am I feeling resentful toward my loved one with ADHD?
- What can I do to help my loved one at home, at work, and in other areas of life?
- How can I avoid wasting time and money on sham treatments?
- What if my loved one doesn’t want help?
- Adults with ADHD can achieve their goals and live out big dreams — and you can help.
In this book you will learn practical steps for helping your loved one accept and manage their disorder, and pursue unique, often nontraditional pathways to success.

Excellent information about ADHD.

The letters “ADHD” are generally associated with children and adolescents, and this explains why we know more about recommended assessment and treatments for this disorder in this age group and very little about how the same letters (ADHD) also apply in the case of adults. The main contribution of Dr. Barkley’s book is that he shows that ADHD is also a significant mental disorder during the adulthood stage of development, and then provides assessment, diagnostic, and treatment guidelines you should consider when an adult you love has ADHD. Among practical recommendations in this book. readers should consider the discussion regarding how one can tell a loved one has ADHD (which is a very difficult task to accomplish, because of the multiplicity of symptoms needed to differentiate ADHD from other mental disorders); how one can convince a loved one with ADHD to seek treatment; what can you expect if you live with an adult with ADHD; and how can you help your loved one with ADHD to differentiating proven treatments from unproven treatments for adults diagnosed with ADHD.

With this book Russell Barkley has broken new ground on the subject of adult ADHD. Having ADHD myself, being a parent of a still struggling adult ADHD child and as a psychotherapist specializing in adult ADHD, I found this book extremely informative, useful and validating. There is a wealth here of the most up to date information on adult ADHD, as well as relevant personal stories that help the reader get a deep and compassionate view into the challenges adults with ADHD are faced with, including his own story of his painful experience with his ADHD brother and nephew. He offers much here to help parents, partners and others with a struggling ADHD adult loved one in their lives better understand adult ADHD, and how to constructively support a person with this disability without martyring themeselves. A must read. Bravo, Dr Barkely!

Its easy to read and helpful, even for non-English reader like me. Though there are few facts that some people may not want to accept, like diet and supplements doesn’t help much.

I rarely feel like a writer gets ADHD or like they describe it in a way that is anything more than clinical. This guy gets it, and he knows how to write about it. I’ve been wanting to find a resource to explain to my family what this disorder is and how it works, and this is the only one I’ve found that feels right.

I am a clinical psychologist who specializes in diagnosing and treating ADHD. Well-replicated research indicates that ADHD remains greatly under-diagnosed, especially in females. Frequently, individuals struggling with ADHD are diagnosed with disorders that exist secondary to the ADHD (depression, anxiety, substance abuse, personally disorders).
Every week, I encounter providers who are grossly uninformed about ADHD. Many have inappropriately negative attitudes about people with ADHD. The opposite is true for Barkley. He is one of the scientists who has done the most to help us treat ADHD sufferers effectively and with compassion.
Parenting or living with someone with ADHD can be extremely challenging. This book does a good job of helping parents, friends, partners and ADHD sufferers to more effectively address the interpersonal challenges.

A great deal of information you find on ADD has to do with children and teens. This is a great book for those of us who want to help our adult loved one. Dr. Russell does not sugarcoat the real detrimental effects on the life of the person with ADD and those around him who care and love him/her. At the same time, it offers scientific information and real effective and practical ways to deal with it. It really is an eye opener and must read for those of us who are committed to being part of our loved ADD loved one’s success.

The author knows what he’s talking about, not only from the standpoint of a clinician, but first and foremost from the angle of someone with profound personal experience. Very good to read and very well structured, this book explains the disorder in a very understandable and not too technical or dry manner. It gave me a lot of insights about the struggles someone with ADHD, depending on the degree of severity of course, may have in everyday life.

If an adult in your family has ADHD, Russell Barkley’s book is very helpful – a must-read. He writes with the insight of both the professional that he is, and as the relative of family members with ADHD.

So much today makes sense from earlier years! Why I am the way I am today and why in the heck I do the things I do!!! This has been a big help!

I have been struggling with my son’s ADHD for years. He not only has ADHD but ODD, BPD, anxiety and depression. At first I believed he was a juvenile delinquent, antisocial. As he grew older I noticed he was very intelligent but dumb at the same time. He is now 37 but still has child like qualities, parts of him still behave like a teenager. After reading this book it was like someone turned on the lights. I didn’t just think he had a problem I knew. This book could have been written by me. The sad thing is the doctors in the UK are not willing to believe he has a problem and are adamant that his “condition” is not treatable and just a personality………. This book has given me the stength and ammunition I needed to go all out and make them understand.

A great book that explains how difficult life is for ADHD people. It is easy to read and is full of facts about this problem that many people have, through no fault of their own. I highly recommend it….remember…”it is not their fault”.

This is the best description of ADHD I’ve ever read by a well respected professor. It is a bit repetitive.

This book had so much helpful information about how to be supportive of someone who has Adult ADHD. There is so much more going on with ADHD than what the general public says and thinks. This book is an excellent read even if you don’t have someone with ADHD in your life.

We were heading for divorce when we bought the book. My husband was on medication but still did not see himself as ADHD. He diligently read every word! The change in him, in living with him, is night and day! Excellent book for those really interested in the subject.
