Description

This book provides psychotherapists with a multidimensional view of childhood neglect and a practical roadmap for facilitating survivors’ healing.
Working from a strong base in attachment theory, esteemed clinician Ruth Cohn explores ways therapists can recognize the signs of childhood neglect, provides recommendations for understanding lasting effects that can persist into adulthood, and lays out strategies for helping clients maximize therapeutic outcomes. Along with extensive clinical material, chapters introduce skills that therapists can develop and hone, such as the ability to recognize and discern non-verbal attempts at communication. They also provide an array of resources and evidence-based treatment modalities that therapists can use in session.
Working with the Developmental Trauma of Childhood Neglect is an essential book for any mental health professional working with survivors of childhood trauma.

In this book, Ruth Cohn names and validates the often invisible, yet deeply profound, injury of childhood neglect. With extraordinary compassion she offers the reader a way to understand and recognize the many ways in which neglect can permeate one’s life. And with extraordinary experience and lots of hard work she lights the way forward and reveals that healing is truly possible. Thank you for this gift.

This book is a deeply moving gift for those who have experienced or those who treat childhood trauma. The author paints a vivid picture of the traumatized child as an adult and skillfully draws the reader’s attention to how trauma manifests.

It is written in a very accessible manner for the layperson and clinician alike. It is informative without being pedantic, accessible without being too chatty, and most of all, it is deeply compassionate. The author draws upon decades of experience and paints a skillful picture of trauma, with clearly articulated strategies and tools for a clinician to work with this patient population. Each chapter grapples with a different topic could be read standalone, but the real strength of the book lies in how the content builds on itself. This is a real gem of a book – layperson and clinician alike will benefit from it!

Ruth Cohn has a way with words. She is able to explain the theory with anecdote and science in a way that grips you and informs you. This is a true guide to healing and I recommend it for anyone out there who works with individuals suffering with mental health issues caused by trauma, and indeed those individuals themselves. It shines a light on places we might not have known to look. Thank you Ruth.

This book is a deep look into the many aspects of childhood neglect, presented in a way even a layperson can understand and benefit. The case histories, connected as they are to a specific aspect of the effect of neglect, allow the reader to understand and learn, even without a background in psychotherapy.
I am grateful to Ms Cohn for this book, which has helped me to understand and feel compassion for anyone suffering from this condition.

Ruth Cohn is masterful as she presents the case for addressing the impact of neglect. She weaves together research, personal stories, and her vast experience as a psychotherapist. As a former superintendent, I can testify that only in the last few years, educators have become aware of the impact of what Cohn describes as “capital T Trauma.” She now is enlightening us about the impact of the developmental trauma of neglect. In schools, we witness it with quiet children who melt into the woodwork or others who bend over backward to please us. We often exacerbate their experience of neglect by ignoring them because these children are not demanding or disrupting. By reading her book, educators will be able to understand some of the signals and respond appropriately.

Disclaimer: I am a longtime client of Ruth Cohn. I echo the praise other reviewers have said about this book. And, since I’ve learned so much more from Ruth than all that I learned reading both her books, I want to offer more than just a book review.

Ruth is phenomenal, and it shows in all her work. She has a deeply compassionate heart, a prodigious memory, and a dedication to her vocation that inspires her to seek out as much knowledge and research as she can. She prizes science-based information, never hearsay. She abhors blame, and encourages clients to move beyond blaming themselves or each other. She believes that we need not feel ashamed for the things we did (or sometimes still do) in order to survive. She believes that we are not responsible for what happened *to* us—we are only responsible for what we do today and tomorrow. She firmly believes that there’s nothing an individual or couple can’t work through as long as they keep trying. All of this and more comes through in her books—both this one and her previous, equally excellent book, *Coming Home to Passion.* Ruth is truly a lifesaver. I’m immeasurably grateful to her for all the ways she’s helped me make my life better.

Ruth Cohn has made an invaluable contribution to anyone working with clients of neglect, an area that has largely and sadly been relatively unaddressed elsewhere. She has shared deep insights into recognizing this aspect of childhood wounding, conveying the signs and patterns to look for and then how to guide a client toward wholeness and healing. Ruth’s care for her patients shines through in the case studies and portraits she lovingly provides. Her humility in sharing mistakes she’s made while developing consummate skill in this regard makes this book accessible…to practitioners and laypeople. The book is also deeply moving. Take advantage of the treasure.

A must read for anyone who works with individuals suffering with mental health problems related to trauma as well as the patients themselves. With great case studies it focuses on areas we have neglected for far too long.

Anyone working as a therapist or counselor should read this book as it will prove illuminating regarding the impact of neglect on both the developing brain and psyche. Emotional neglect is much more prevalent than typically thought and can have a limiting impact on a client’s efforts in and response to therapy. Ruth brings her years of experience of working with the effects of neglect on attachment and combines that with a strong understanding of up-to-date findings regarding the neurobiological effects of abuse and neglect. She describes this material in a very effective manner sharing, not only her successes but also her “failures” along the way. As with all gifted therapists, much more is learned from our mistakes than from our successes. Many are hesitant to share them, though, and Ruth is to be commended for sharing many of these learning experiences in her book. I supervise a number of clinicians and have strongly recommended they get this book and incorporate the many insights revealed in their work with clients.

This should be in every therapist’s library.

Ruth really get’s it. Building on the latest research on the effects of neglect and her hard earned experience as a therapist learning to deal with developmental trauma she offers insight and practical advice for effectively work with this underserved population.

Very well-written and well-researched book that explains so clearly why neglect is so incredibly damaging for children.

Book arrived in good condition. Judith Beck presents CBT as a practical and doable approach to this counselling theory. Far less complicated than you’d expect. And because it’s Judith Beck you know its accurate and research based.

Excellent book to help Clinicians use CBT with patients/ clients . The author teaches Clinicians how to use an agenda for sessions, action plans, and how to structure the session. I found the book extremely helpful in structuring my sessions with clients . The book also helps with assessments and treatment plans.

  27. Dana Pillsbury (verified owner)

The book provides a good basic overview of CBT, even if the style is a bit stultifying in sections. Perfectly comprehensible to a layperson as well, so can be handed to the interested patient. Could use more discussion on helping patients to cope when thoughts are not inaccurate, and how to deal with patients who are digging in their toes on a core belief.

  28. Richard S Clark (verified owner)

This book acts as an excellent training and overall source for therapists interested in applying CBT to their approach. Beck is very good at integrating new information and modifying her ideas to integrate new information about both CBT and the patience’s desire to have a therapist who is not fixated on their own ideas and experiences.
Please use this book as a starting point for further leaps of imagination into other cognitive approaches.

I quickly finished this whole book and found it interesting and helpful. It is written for practicing clinicians, but I am just on my own journey of recovering from developmental trauma, and yet I found it easy to understand and insightful. The author is quite kind and compassionate. Because it’s written for clinicians and not necessarily a general audience, it might not be the best book for someone who is new to therapy or these issues. I’ve done a lot of therapy and found it helpful to get the background.

The author/publisher really does need to hire a copy editor. On almost every page there are misplaced commas. At times the incorrect punctuation is just distracting, but sometimes I had to read sentences multiple times to figure out the meaning because the commas break the phrases and sentences in the wrong places. There are also some obvious typos that a proofreader would catch. Despite this, the book is still worth purchasing and reading, but it could be made better with an editor.

This is an excellent and very informative text for therapists, clients and people who care about anyone in their life who has survived trauma and neglect. Ruth Cohn writes from a kind, caring and very knowledgeable perspective. Her book is a significant contribution to the field of psychotherapy and will be treasured by practitioners and survivors alike. It should also be required reading for psychotherapists in training. I am a therapist, survivor and former longterm client of Ruth’s. She even offered to and helped me figure out how to thread my Mom’s hardly used heavy metal sewing machine! I highly recommend this book.

This was exactly what I was looking for and needed

  32. Jerry Littlefield (verified owner)

As an adult now intellectually aware that I’m a product of intergenerational complex PTSD, it was Alice Miller who led me to Ruth Cohn’s book which added depth and direction for me. Not being a clinician, I still could not put the book down and highlighted the essential points that apply to a client’s growth. If I engaged a therapist where I live, a Ruth Cohn would be what I’d want. Two challenges to the text are (1) the failure to clean up the punctuation, and (2) the author’s sentence structure often begins with a clause leaving me hanging out there in wait of the subject and verb to get to the point. Perhaps we have different levels of comprehension, but the knowledge is there even if I need to read a sentence or two a couple times. I truly value this informative book, and will come back to it as I journal and digest Pete Walker’s book which is better directed in layman’s terms towards my needs to both intellectually and emotionally understand and approach my situation.
