Description
In this second edition of CBT Made Simple, two renowned psychologists and experts in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) offer the most comprehensive manual available to help professionals learn CBT and deliver it to clients for better treatment outcomes.
CBT is an evidence-based treatment for several mental health disorders, including anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anger problems. This simple, pragmatic guide offers everything you need to know about CBT: what it is, how it works, and how to implement it in session.
This fully revised and updated second edition of CBT Made Simple provides a user-friendly, practical approach to learning CBT using up-to-the-minute teaching methods and learning tools—in particular, the “effective adult learning model,” which promotes interactive learning, experiential learning, and self-reflection. Each chapter presents key elements of CBT in clear, accessible language, and includes client dialogues and clinical examples. Practical exercises are incorporated throughout, enabling you to practice and consolidate your learning. In addition, each chapter mimics the structure of an actual CBT session.
This new edition also includes the core components of CBT—core beliefs, intermediate beliefs, and behavioral experiments—to make this the most comprehensive CBT manual you’ll find anywhere.
If you are a clinician or student interested in learning more about CBT, this book—part of the New Harbinger Made Simple series that includes ACT Made Simple and DBT Made Simple—has everything you need to hit the ground running. Why not make it a part of your professional library?

‘CBT Made Simple’ is a comprehensive and practical guide for trainees who are new to practicing CBT and also for seasoned CBT clinicians seeking to brush up on foundational CBT skills. The book covers a wide variety of CBT interventions with ample breadth and depth, clearly tying research to practice. It’s a must-have resource that clinicians will find themselves referring back to on countless occasions.

As a supervisor and professor, I am always on the hunt for accessible and practical books for students and trainees. Dr. Josefowitz’s book is excellent. Her writing is clear, and she brings cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to life through worksheets and realistic case examples. Dr. Josefowitz’s warmth shines through and she provides tips to enhance the therapeutic relationship. This book really does distil the fundamental principles and techniques of CBT in a simple but not overly-simplistic manner. I think this book would be instructive not only for grad students and early career therapists, but it would also be an excellent read for seasoned clinicians who are hoping to add cognitive behavioural therapy skills to their repertoire.

CBT Made Simple is a deceptive title. It is really CBT Demystified, Accessible, and Applicable. The act of making it “simple” is a careful distillation of sophisticated theory, research and practice by two seasoned clinicians, a psychologist and a psychiatrist. This book is a wonderful example of knowledge translation into clinical practice. The authors emphasize the importance of structure, goals and evaluation in psychotherapy while recognizing the importance of therapeutic flexibility. They also place appropriate priority on recognizing people’s strengths and resilience as well as their struggles, compelling clinicians to be able to answer the question regarding their patients of “What are they good at?” If, as a clinician, you don’t know the answer, then your patients also know you don’t know, and thus they inevitably feel they are only a set of problems in your eyes.
While the concepts of the text are nuanced, the language is plain in a good way. It is also not excessively theoretical, and the learning in using this book comes often from doing the exercises incorporated into it – echoing cognitive behavioural therapy’s orientation toward action, experiment, and hypothesis testing. This is not a book to be simply read passively. There are handouts, exercises, audio and video clips on the linked website that engage the reader actively in each chapter.
This book will be valuable to a wide array of disciplines: primary care physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, psychologists, occupational therapists and counsellors, as well as psychiatrists – and to the students in all those fields.

As a therapist, the ability to be creative and think on one’s feet is crucial as each patient requires a unique treatment plan. CBT Made Simple provides clear and thorough guidance for integrating structured CBT exercises and tools, even if you are not an exclusive practitioner of CBT. The writing is easy to process and engaging to read, and the content is eminently implementable. I would recommend this book to any clinician who wishes to brush up on their CBT techniques and feel more confident using them with their patients.

CBT Made Simple is simply the best resource for new and seasoned clinicians alike who want to understand the foundations of CBT, hone their CBT skills, and gain confidence in applying CBT to myriad client presentations. Josefowitz and Myran expertly weave together CBT theory, instruction, practice and clinical vignettes in ways that encourage active engagement and self-reflection. The frequently found “Your Turn!” sections consistently push readers to get out of their heads and into the therapy room. CBT Made Simple shows the richness and depth that the CBT approach brings while still remaining accessible and practical. Ultimately, this demystifies the approach and demonstrates that, with some effort and practice, anyone can learn to use CBT as an effective driver of positive change. CBT Made Simple has earned a space on my shelf, where I’m certain it will sit well-loved and dog-eared for years to come.

I have just finished a course in my master’s program that was based on Dr. Josefowitz’s textbook – CBT Made Simple. I found the explanations to be clear and engaging, and the exercises, graphics, worksheets and videos deepened my learning considerably. When I started the course I was not sure I would be using CBT in my future practice, but using Dr. Josefowitz’s textbook has inspired me to incorporate CBT as a main therapeutic framework. This textbook was the core of a great learning experience.

Very basic CBT text, bit boring.

This is a very basic CBT book, primarily suitable for new therapists and perhaps even someone who wants to use it as a self-help book. I don’t recommend it for experienced clinicians. One specific thing that bothered me – under “Raoul’s Stressors and Strengths” (near the end of the book), “moderate drinking” was listed as a strength. I can’t imagine any experienced medical or mental health professional, myself included, who would ever consider that to be a “strength” or “area of resilience”, for anyone in general – let alone a therapy client struggling with anxiety, depression, or any other mental health issue.
