Description
For the average clinician, individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) often represent the most challenging, seemingly insoluble cases. This volume is the authoritative presentation of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Marsha M. Linehan’s comprehensive, integrated approach to treating individuals with BPD. DBT was the first psychotherapy shown in controlled trials to be effective with BPD. It has since been adapted and tested for a wide range of other difficult-to-treat disorders involving emotion dysregulation. While focusing on BPD, this book is essential reading for clinicians delivering DBT to any clients with complex, multiple problems.
Companion volumes: The latest developments in DBT skills training, together with essential materials for teaching the full range of mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance skills, are presented in Linehan’s DBT Skills Training Manual, Second Edition, and DBT Skills Training Handouts and Worksheets, Second Edition. Also available: Linehan’s instructive skills training videos for clients–Crisis Survival Skills: Part One, Crisis Survival Skills: Part Two, From Suffering to Freedom, This One Moment, and Opposite Action.

This book is designed for use in skill training groups for BPD. The author offers advice on adapting it to be used in individual therapy however. Linehan is forging a place in the mental health field as the foremost clinican in dealing with BPD. The reader is immediately aware of the extensive amount of research that went into this book. The author is not writing about opinion, she is writing about the results of years of extensively scrutinzing the work of herself and others. On the downside the book has the amount and quality of information one would expect from a textbook. This is not light reading, it is however a page turner (as far as academic texts go) if you have ever felt inadequate when dealing with BPD. After applying the ideas in this book I found that BPD was not the same beast in treating than in the past.

This is a textbook and not particularly easy reading for the layperson. However the information presented is valuable to both therapist and patient. Not only does it give hard facts on studies done about both BPD and this type of treatment on the disorder, but it does an excellent job of explaining the concept of DBT, the variant of CBT that has been successful for patients with BPD. The very basis of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy can be confusing and difficult to grasp, but the book does a great job with it. Dr. Linehan goes into specific details of the therapy itself, what is required of both patient and therapist and common problems that interfere with the success of the therapy–and that’s only the first few chapters.
I’m not a fan of expensive textbooks, and this is not one you’ll find cheap even used, but in my opinion it was well worth the money spent for a better understanding.

For the most part, we usually see the red workbook more often than this original study. Linehan went to great depths to research and create this work which seems to describe the underlying nature of BPD very well. On top of that she considers the treatment, but also relooks some of the earlier – but still rampant – biases against people suffering from BPD. If you are working with BPD clients/patients, or doing research into aspects of BPD, this should be required reading. If you are interested in BPD but on a more superficial level, you could pass this and move on to something more current and tailored to general audiences.
All that said, almost anyone working with patients suffering from BPD can benefit from this work. It is tied closely to Linehan’s red workbook as well.

I absolutely love this book. It is full of insightful and useful information on treating BPD and includes many fantastic worksheets and handouts that help illustrate important points to clients. This is a go-to resource in my therapy library.

Excellent textbook, an absolute basic for training and practice. Very useful formulation and theoretical foundation. However, it is dry to read.

What a fantastic tool for mental health professionals! As a MSW intern this text has been invaluable in understanding how DBT works. The language is simple and straightforward and provides excellent insight on how to work with Borderline Personalities. I am so glad to have had this book recommended to me.
Michele Lob (verified owner) –
This is an excellent book. It is required reading material for the DBT Certification exam.

Definitely a beneficial source to assist in treating BPD, along with other impulsive disorders. There is a new version out on digital copy that would be just as helpful.
Nekota (verified owner) –
I got this in combination with the new edition of the workbook and training guide. It’s an excellent reference for DBT and the therapy really works.

I again thought this was a book about earth moving equipment and whilst I have learnt a lot about Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder I have yet to work out hoe to change the oil in my old JCB digger in the yard 🙁

The author is thorough & has first hand experience & research. While there is some repetition, I found it helpful. This is slow reading with lots to unpack & think about. So far, the best I’ve read on the subject

The book is difficult to read at first. I read the introduction, started chapter one and was confused so I put the book down for two weeks. Finally picked it back up and glad I did. It will all make sense through out the book.
The book is great and an eye opener in many areas of life. I’ve heard how this has changed peoples lives but for me, I think I may need to read it a couple more times for me to fully set in. I’ve battled with severe depression for many years that have caused my production to significantly decrease and I got into bad habits so I’m learning on how to change my life. Again, this book is great and helpful! I’m glad someone wrote something helpful like this!

From the originator of DBT therapy, a series of meticulously referenced and comprehensive textbooks and workbooks.

James was able to summarize in a very practical way the things that worked for him and also, based on additional research what can work for almost anyone. Without falling into deep technical analysis, this book has an interesting approach on how to implement habits going little by little. I think it is a good literature for anyone, but it can have a higher impact in young adults, where positive changes they do will have a huge impact on their lives later on.

I bought the book to explore strategies on how I can live with ADHD.
There are a number of strategies mentioned in the book that I already do. But there are a bunch of ideas I didn’t know about.
The only down side of the book is that it really address the problems retirees have.
It’s mostly for people who are still working.
Other than that it was a good book.
I bought one for a friend!!

James Clear invites the reader to discover the intuitive connection between our habits and our identities. Oftentimes, we are mindlessly tossed into our bad habits, while our desired habits destruct in meaningless chatter, and delusional wishes that leave us empty in the same old thought patterns. Clear advocates starting at the “atomic” level with incremental moments in time in addition to environmental design. The result is a patient and conscious appreciation of the positive shifts in one’s identity. I have used and advocated for many of Clear’s suggestions and am grateful to have been recommended to his book.
I also want to note that James Clear offers valuable supplemental material when you purchase the book. In addition, his email list is also a great source for inspirational quotes, practices, and weekly questions that probe whether one is on the right path in life. Clear’s generosity must be noted in connection to his dedication to not only the study of habits, but also his commitment to bettering the lives of his readers.
In short, one cannot help, but garner some valuable and life changing insights and practices from Atomic Habits.

It was a bold gift to get my dad a self help book however I have heard such good things about it and so now I am sitting back and awaiting results bc he loves to read and so it is only a matter of time

I first heard of this book through the Craig Groeschel Leadership Podcast. I bought this book, and have read it through three times, bought it in Audible, used it as source material to build the capacity of my team at work, and have used it in my professional work, as well. After I cited the book as a primary source in a training at work, my whole team purchased it!! It is easy to read and extremely relevant, with easy to understand strategies and processes for you to use to improve at whatever you set your mind to improve. Craig Groeschel has since published a book called The Power To Change which cites James Clear’s work and provides biblical truth to extend the teaching in Atomic Habits. It is a great companion to this book by James Clear!!

I maxed out my renewals for this book (the audio version) at my local library, and just had to buy a hard copy for myself; upon telling my older sister about a great book I had recently discovered, I learned that she had done the exact same thing about two weeks before I did, with this same book!
In short, this book has been my go-to resource and motivation/inspiration to make many small changes over the past three months. As a result, my fingernails are longer, my eating and exercising habits are so much better than what I would have imagined in such a small time frame, and I have renewed faith in what I can accomplish when I consider those 4 laws he mentions to develop better habits, all the while using the inverse of those 4 laws to whittle down and eventually eliminate the not-so-good ones! I have recommended this book to many friends and family members already, and will continue to do so!
Lola Vasquez (verified owner) –
Got it for it popularity and its great but its a bit academical or like too rigid for its structure for me, pretty sure it works for a lot of people! But a bit boring to read for my taste

I really enjoyed this book. I actually purchased it via Audible but also bought a physical copy for repeated reference. The author does a fantastic job of supporting all of his advice with data, research, and clear examples. It’s also one of the most practical “self improvement” books I’ve read. Each rule of habit building is easy to follow and easy to apply. Immediately after I finished the book, I was able to make some simple changes that had a big impact on my productivity at work and at home. I really can’t recommend this book highly enough!

James Clear has written a clear concise book on how to improve yourself. He provides definite steps to take to get to the place you want to take yourself. His two-minute rule for habit forming and his 1% daily improvement method are very easy ways to achieve results. And that is just the beginning. He has many other techniques to create, maintain and improve habits that in the end will make you what you have been trying to become. But in addition, he will stay in touch with you and send you reminders and a free newsletter full of tidbits to keep you motivated.
I am happy that I came across James’s book and that I sent for his newsletter.
I only wish that I had this book available when I was much younger.
Thank you so much Mr. Clear for sharing your wisdom.

This book is very easy to read and very well written. The author gives you steps to take to achieve your goals. He thoroughly explains what causes the formation of habits. Very simple things. Instead of seeing the small changes you make to form good habits as insignificant, you will see how those tiny changes all add up to make a huge difference. It is those tiny changes that are required in order to achieve goals. But if we continually dismiss those tiny changes as insignificant and never make those changes, we cannot achieve our goals.
jmolson (verified owner) –
Great book and an easy read, but importantly the lessons within are easy to implement. A key point for me was the meaning of atomic as something small and powerful. There are small things you can do every day to facilitate good habits and quell bad ones and these things build on each other. James Clear uses an approach that once you see it seems like common sense, but that also calls attention to things you are already doing in your life to drive your habits, both good and bad, whether you are aware of them or not. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to make small changes for the better that lead to meaningful results.

Certainly nothing earth shattering in the book dialog and worth the read
Sabra (verified owner) –
This book is so so good it helps you see things from a different point of view and take a step back to look at how you are doing things that aren’t helping you grow but the steps to get you there. You pick this up and you don’t want to put it down I highly recommend if your interested in a self inspiring book that also give you some good knowledge behind the way we go about our daily lives.
Maddy (verified owner) –
This book is an excellent book for those people who are interested in self improvement.
The personal story of the author, the concrete vignettes he offers in his approach to self-improvement
are good, but his approach and recommendations is the most worthwhile reason to read this book..His “way” makes a lot of common sense, is instantly relatable, and has psychological validity.
I bought one book for myself and another to gift to a friend.
JaneR (verified owner) –
Wow!! This is the best book I’ve read that explains how crucial it is to form good habits and the process involved. There is no magic wand and as an older individual I had learned that quite a while ago. But I didn’t understand the whole picture of forming better habits, triggers, etc. Atomic Habits is heping me to change bad habits and create good ones for helping to become more fit and lose weight. This book came highly recommended by several health/fitness people that I follow on youtube and I am SO GLAD I bought it!

I really enjoyed the content of this book! I have created and sustained 5 habits over the 35 days, while reading this. I will say it felt very repetitive at times but I understand it is because of the compounding knowledge as you work through the book.

I found the book simple and enjoyable to read. While I don’t agree with everything I do believe it helps to shift one’s thinking/viewpoint around not only habits but life itself.

Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones by James Clear is an educational and informative book. My coach recommends me to read this book about habit. This is my first time reading from the author. James Clear did an amazing job.
James Clear teaches his readers how to change their habits from bad to good. He explains the three levels of change: identity, processes and outcomes. My two favorite quotes from this book, “A habit is a routine or behavior that is performed regularly—and, in many cases, automatically.” “Human behavior is always changing: situation to situation, moment to moment, second to second.” The three main habits that I want to change are to be organize, stay healthy and be more productive.
Good read

This book was written in a way that anyone can understand. I plan to have my 14 year old read it. Yet the ideas are not elementary. One of my favorite things about the book is that he recapped at the end of each chapter. That was very helpful.

The idea that habits, even though subtle can have compounding effects was an eye opener. Second, I liked the way the author detailed practical ways of easily adopting the habits we want and desire.

Self help books often feels too obvious to myself, everyone knows its good to develop a habit that benefits in the long run but this book actually gives practical advises that takes human nature into consideration. I think its inspiring and really helps me to reflect on myself, really easy read as well!

This book is a game-changer. I have always known that habits are the key to a successful team, life, or enterprise. However, I never had to sophistication to know how to mold these habits in a way that would work for me. This book gave me those tools. This book brought to light the key ways in which I can work within my human nature to maximize my habit plans. This is one of those rare books that has the potential to change the way you construct your life, go ahead and give it a shot.

I bought the book initially for my son, after he read it he recommended it to me as I love organization. I enjoyed the stories about real people, all interesting. Each chapter is a building block that is easily accomplished, put together they make for an easy organized life.

BY all preliminary indications it will work. The subject is well thought out and rolled out with logic, and a degree of entertainment.
The problem is a personal one. Do you REALLY want to change? Of course that is covered in the book. Having read quite a few books on the subject this is one of the best of the lot if not the best.
It sits on my stack of “to read” . . . Because I personally need to step up to the plate and put it into work. The author is too be commended.

This book is profound and has a new perspective on how one could live and improve their life. It’s helped me to gain new habits and also provided me with a system to break bad habits such as procrastination.

I would say the texture is really good but the only thing I didn’t enjoy was that the pages we’re folded

One of the most valuable insights of the book is the concept of “atomic habits.” Clear explains that the key to achieving long-term success is to focus on making small, incremental changes to your habits. By doing so, you can create a chain reaction of positive habits that will lead to significant improvements over time.
Clear provides a range of strategies and techniques that readers can use to build better habits. He emphasizes the importance of identifying the underlying causes of bad habits, and provides practical advice on how to change them. He also explores the role of environment and social influences in shaping our habits, and how we can leverage these factors to make positive changes in our lives.

This book is excellent for learning to build good habits and break bad ones.
It is not overly academic but, instead, is approachable and actionable. I was able to utilize many of the tools before I finished the book.
I have read a few books on habits and habit building, but this is hands-down the one I will be recommending from now on.

I love that his strategies and systems are practical and can be put to use immediately, into any lifestyle. Whether you’re a wellness, life or weight loss coach, an entrepreneur, CEO or a parent we all need to develop helpful habits and eliminate the ones that no longer serve us. Brilliant writer. Very relatable human being and also inspiring.
