Description
Understand DBT-informed art therapy, and how to apply it to your practice. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) treats problems with emotion regulation, and is especially effective in treating chronic self-harming and suicidal behaviors associated with Borderline Personality Disorder. Combining the structure and skill development of DBT with the creativity and non-verbal communication of art therapy can be a significant advantage in treating patients who are resistant to talking therapy.
This book gives a comprehensive overview of the growing literature and research on DBT-informed art therapy, drawing upon the work of pioneers in the field to explain different types of DBT-informed art therapy and the ‘Three Ms’ at its core: Mindfulness, Metaphor and Mastery. It also includes creative visual exercises and activities for developing the skills of core mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and non-judgemental acceptance among clients.

This book is an excellent resource for clinicians who want to expand on creative ways to emphasize coping skills with clients. I bought the book three weeks ago, and already I have used it in practice several times. Included in the book are very informative descriptions of DBT skills. The author then offers several very user-friendly experiential art tasks that can be adapted for all ages. Thank you for an excellent resource!

I am so glad this book exists! As a beginning art therapist working at a DBT-based residential program, this resource is exactly what I was looking for. DBT can be so overwhelming when you first dive in and I needed the extra help.
There is a detailed explanation of DBT that is actually comprehensible for anyone who struggles with Linehan’s writing style (I know I do). There are dozens of activities included right in the book with the objectives and DBT skills explained for each one. I am writing my own six-month curriculum from scratch and this book has been a lifesaver.

So few books out there incorporating DBT with art therapy. Clark provides great insight not just on using DBT in art therapy but applying the principles of practice as well. I will continue to reference this book. I work with teenage girls in crisis and DBT is so helpful; combined with art making they learn skills hands on without it feeling like therapy at all. Looking forward to more work by Clark in the future.

Very clear and succinct. Interesting and explained well with descriptive examples which are underpinned with theory. Very helpful in explaining in easy to read language what art therapy through the DBT lens looks like.

I am not a councilor but I am in DBT. I want to decide if I wanted to add art therapy to my treatment. Really, I wanted to know what to expect and this was the only one i could find. Very educational
