Anna Runkle is a pioneer in helping those with PTSD, esp from childhood. Nothing made sense to me until I discovered her YouTube channel “Crappy Childhood Fairy”. It turned my life around.
One of her methods to stop your brain from scrambling is called the Daily Practice. I was really skeptical. I’m not a “follower” until one day when I thought I had gone nuts. Desperate, I tried the Daily Practice. OMG! My mind calmed down and I had a better perspective on what the problem was – of course, it wasn’t what I thought it was. But being re-regulated helped my brain be more at peace. Though my meditation time needs some work, I’m doing the Daily Practice once a day and working myself up to more time in meditation. I’m not as disregulated as I was initially, but if I have nothing to work on (my brain is calm) I just practice the meditation part. Thank you Anna Runkle for saving the lives of this of us struggling to make sense of the world.

I watch Anna’s YouTube channel occasionally. My fiancée really enjoys her work, so I told her about this book after I had received Ann’a newsletter featuring her new book. We currently share the book.
I have gotten to the part where Anna shares her technique for conquering anxiety and resentment. As I practice the techniques, I feel like my spirit is slowly being lifted, old thoughts of what I used to think or be like are coming back to me. I’m feeling more love towards my partner, I feel myself wanting to work with my hands again, and my heart feels lighter.

I have been a YouTube follower of the Crappy Childhood Fairy since 2020, when I began my healing journey from MUCH childhood trauma (sexual abuse, abandonment, neglect, substance abuse) Watching Anna’s videos and now reading her book have explained years of things I had struggled with and had accepted as just part of who I was. I never understood the impact that childhood trauma played in how I related as an adult. A game changer for CPTSD. Many of us have been failed by traditional therapies, and we can’t just avoid all our triggers. Anna teaches us to recognize triggers, take responsibility, prioritize them by severity, and come up with strategies for calming and dealing with them in different ways.
She also explains strategies for staying regulated, like the Daily Practice (private writing and a 20 min meditation), a morning routine, boundaries, etc. Personally, a morning Daily Practice is sufficient for me.
I recommend the hard copy version of this book (or downloading worksheets if available?) because the journaling exercises are detailed and very worthwhile.

This book, and Anna before the book was published, has been the key that unlocked my healing, after 57 years of looking for it. CPTSD is in fact real (I believe there are plans to include in the DSM) and traditional methods simply don’t get to it. Through her own experience, informed by the work of scholars such as Pete Walker, Anna actually discovered this methodology in service of her own healing from childhood trauma. Because it was so powerful for her she set out to share it with others, and I’m so grateful that she did.
If it isn’t obvious yet I highly recommend this book. But I also strongly suggest that you try her methodology as is, without skimming the book or tweaking the methodology, if you really want to explore what it might do for you.

I read Re-Regulated with a TON of hesitation and a bit of fear. I was afraid that Ann Rundle was going to push me to re-live and remember. Instead, when I finally started reading, I could not put it down until I had completed all of the journal prompts and begun the Daily Practice. I’m not one to be easily led into practices because I thought I’d tried them all, decades of talk therapy, various meds, etc… none really enabling the change that I sought. This practice is different. It works for me. Today on my run I felt free and in touch with my best self. Note: I recently missed two days in a row of doing *The Daily Practice* and realized that it works so much better when I take (or make) the time to do it, and that it’s especially important to do so on the days when I feel like I don’t have the time to do so.
What I’ve discovered by doing *The Daily Practice* is that the time I take to do this is an investment of time that pays dividends the rest of the day. I’m actually GIVING MYSELF MORE TIME each day by taking the time to do it.

I believe there are some people, books, speeches, and events that impact this entire world because enough prayers went up. In my opinion, this book, this woman, these teachings are a gift. Several decades of confusion, struggle, and failure is what characterized my life, even when it seemed I was the epitome of success. Within a matter of months I have seen true and qualitative change.
Like the hygienic advances of washing and having clean water to modern society, this simple method needs to be embraced and taught in every home, school, and church. This may very well be the answer to our mental health crisis.

I have spent years regurgitating the details of multiple traumatic events in my past. I had completely lost faith altogether in the psychiatric profession because I never experienced anything remotely resembling lasting relief from trauma symptoms. I have been in & out of therapeutic settings since the early 80s! I did not seek relief in medication bc I have witnessed so many people around me just getting worse or staying the same on the next ‘best thing’ RX.
I knew there had to be better answers & a better way to deal with the pervasive cognitive/emotional/relational struggles I have faced all my life due to multiple childhood traumatic experiences (8 out of 10 on the ACEs). I had no name for what I was battling & none of the convenient diagnoses ‘du jour’ seemed to fit the fact pattern. I was even told that perhaps I needed to be tested for Asperger’s when that was the in-vogue “designer diagnosis”. At least the idea of my brain being wired differently and the concept of “neurodivergence” was closer to the “mark” than any other diagnosis I had received. That was 10 years ago!
So, for years, I could find no satisfying answers, no lasting relief and I experienced no forward progress in my life. I was just ricocheting from one triggering event/job/relationship after another and in a perpetual recovery state from the fallout of the less than optimal consequences of my amygdala-hijacked hyperbolic responses to such events–things other people would deem “just normal life”, well, except for surviving a devastating hurricane as an adult & contracting long-term treatment resistant Lyme disease that nearly disabled me (another story).
And then, one day in April 2024, I stumbled on a Crappy Childhood Fairy video. I almost dismissed it. In 20 minutes, I had all the answers I had been seeking for over 40 years!.I then began to voraciously consume every CCF video and everything I could find CPTSD-related. It was the most helpful life-altering revelation ever.
I can’t tell you how many hours and how much money I have spent in support groups and talking to every kind of therapist in every healing modality you can imagine. None of it helped me.
Arguably, it made me worse, bc having to continue to talk about the traumas kept REINFORCING those neural pathways. It makes absolute perfect sense that early trauma can severely hinder a child’s neurological development. Now that I finally have a working problem definition that fits the fact pattern, real healing can begin. I knew, in my case, that meds weren’t the answer for me personally. That they would provide temporary relief but never resolve the underlying problems. I knew there was something “structural” that needed to be repaired (brain wiring!).
Thank you Anna, for all your efforts! I now finally have the clarity to focus my time & energy on that which will provide permanent relief–on becoming Re-regulated!
The first step I have taken is to implement the Daily Practice. That alone has provided some relief since I made that commitment.. I’m also delving into DBT and ACT as well at this point as well. Thank you!

“Re-Regulated” including the Daily Practice which turned out to be the missing puzzle piece to use in combination with meditation that had been helpful, previously, but kind of plateaued for me. January, 2024, Anna’s video appeared on my Youtube stream, serendipitously, and that is one of my favorite ways to discover new things! It took me a few videos before the “penny dropped”… then I realized this ‘is really speaking to me’… it’s what I’ve been dealing with most of my life… on my own more so than not.
Now, I had names and words (dysregulated or crap fit, to name a few), to attach to my symptoms! It’s her down to earth story that has certain elements that are so relatable to what I experienced, which makes it easier to apply to my own life to improve. The book is a wonderful extension of her videos and her website! It’s something tangible that I can pick up at any time and work through all of the activities to help me continue improving!
