Just received my copy of The ACT Approach, which luckily I pre-ordered. Perusing this book and appreciating the way it has been laid out, which gives so much insight to what we do as ACT therapists, coaches, consultants. One of the beauties of this, for those of us who were not trained in CBT, is the way in which it explains CBT terminology and makes it all so rapidly accessible. I also deeply appreciate the very clear and straightforward ways the authors have enlightened us to Relational Frame Theory, which is often offered in such an obscure fashion as to be incomprehensible. From an ACT perspective, it lays out the work in simple, fun ways that lighten the load. The use of the ACT Matrix and Kevin Polk’s (ACT Matrix creator) input really enhances the work. This is a “KISS” book and one I highly recommend to both novice and seasoned ACT practitioners. It is a “must” on our shelves of beloved ACT texts. Thank you, Tim and Jessica, for an amazing job.

Tim and Jessica have put together a breakthrough approach to ACT. This guide is full of practical and readily applicable methods for live giving therapy. The ACT Approach embodies simple and effective techniques to promote flexibility in response to life challenges. The writing is vibrant and full of the character and warmth these two gifted therapists bring to their transformational work with both individuals and groups. The approach will help therapists to be more effective in their work in helping people to get the most out of their lives.

Wow, i’m really impressed by this book. I have been using ACT for 12 years and I still learned lots from it, and also gained new ideas on how to present ACT to clients and fellow clinicians. Plus the handouts and worksheets are fantastic too.

Delightful read. Concise yet comprehensive. Concrete yet enables understanding of abstract ideas . A great mix of pictures, examples, and progressive use of ACT processes with various clients who express psychological inflexibility . The best on ACT concepts and principles I have read with specific answers for making essential distinctions in a user friendly way. Have read a lot of books about ACT. This invited me to experience it in a very meaningful way. Learned a lot A great read and the best I have read from many I have chewed and swallowed but this was entirely digested. A new challenge to all who follow ACT as a way of being

Timothy Gordan and Jessica Borushok have written an easy to read and well-scripted book on ACT. As a therapist, life coach, a clinical supervisor who uses ACT in my practice I appreciate books I can recommend to budding therapists or those who want to learn the ACT Approach to therapy and this book makes it ideal for learners.

    Thank you, Tim and Jessica!

This approach is simple to understand, explain and implement. It empowers the individual to identify what is happening now, compare that to what they want and make a conscious choice for how they wish to proceed. Very effective tool for living a better and more meaningful life. I recommend highly.

This excellent book breaks down ACT in an accessible and simple way, the worksheets definately makes the book an experiential exercise which helps solidify all that fabulous knowledge. Well worth a read and well worth the money.

I must confess that I a bit skeptical when this book came out. There are many ACT books out there, and more coming out it all the time Did this book really need to be written?
After reading it, my answer is an enthusiastic yes! It is an elegant and simple book, masterfully weaving together ACT’s theory with case examples. It is a highly accessible book to ACT neophytes while also offering plenty for ACT aficionados. This is a book I will be reading more than once.

I’m not a therapist but I have been in ACT therapy myself and I wanted some in-depth knowledge about ACT and I can highly recommend this book.

This book provides a great introduction to ACT and I especially appreciated the chapters about using ACT interventions with different types of diagnoses. It is by no means an exhaustive resource but, as I said, gives you a solid foundation with a very practical and applicable approach to using ACT in the therapy room. The only reason I’m giving four instead five stars is because the writing seems like it needs one more read-over from an editor or proofreader – there were some really long sentences with no punctuation, which made it difficult to focus on what the writers were trying to say. A great resource all in all, though!

I bought this book because I’ve always had an interest in the ACT approach. This book gives a thorough explanation of The ACT modality and reiterates important concepts throughout the book (great for ppl like myself who needs to hear/read a concept several times for it to sink in). I’m on chapter four and I’ve already been able to apply some of the basic concepts with my clients in private practice. Highly recommend for those who are new to ACT and are looking to develop a basic understanding of the model and application

Many run-on sentences. Written in a conversational tone, but still used jargon to help the reader get used to the ACT language to apply it in their practice. I wanted a more formal intro and resource for this type of therapy working with adolescents, and upon reading the first 4 chapters and the chapter on children/adolescents – I was a little disappointed. The exercises are geared more towards younger children and I didn’t find it all that useful, however, they state several times that ACT is flexible and the therapist can adapt to what works best for their clients. I found myself getting confused at times, the information could have benefited from a bit more organization.

Anyone looking for ACT info working with adolescents, I also bought ACT for adolescents by Turrell and Bell and it is more textbook-like, yet is easy to follow and more organized.

A good, short introduction to the ACT model. It doesn’t focus on metaphors or exercises and instead does a good job of showing how you can flexibly integrate the processes of the ACT model into your clinical conversations.

I especially appreciate the annotated examples of client-therapist conversations provided. Very helpful!
