ADHD is a neurodivergent disorder that presents many challenges for both the child and parents. Knowing triggers and self-regulation strategies can help process the strong emotions that come with this disorder. Written by a mother of two children with ADHD, the information in this book is presented in a very compassionate and understanding manner. The author doesn’t disregard the fact that managing ADHD can be difficult. However, she presents a positive perspective that includes ways to understand the emotional outbursts and remain calm and patient when diffusing heightened emotions. Attention-deficit hyperactive disorder is described in full detail in the first chapter. It describes the various types of ADHD, symptoms, and what to expect. Impulsivity and hyperactivity are symptoms of this disorder, so giving yourself time to pause, be mindful, and set explicit expectations will help ensure that when emotional outbursts ensue, you can help the child achieve emotional regulation. I especially appreciated Chapter 7, because it gives realistic ways to help manage ADHD at home. By setting clear expectations, having a consistent and structured routine, using both verbal and pictorial communication, providing regular exercise, and using positive praise and reward systems will allow your child to learn to adopt positive behaviors. Following the advice in this book will ensure that, even in difficult situations, you can build a strong, positive relationship with anyone diagnosed with ADHD.

Lots of great examples and information in this book. Easy to read and understand. If you’re brand new to the world of ADHD, this is a must read!

I recommend this book for those not familiar with ADHD and/or have newly diagnosed children. The author does a wonderful job of clearly explaining what is ADHD and behaviors that come with it. First step to helping is understanding. I am not new to this diagnosis, so I didn’t find the book personally helpful. I can recognize how it can be extremely helpful for others though! I do implement all the concepts mentioned in this book and it does work. Not a complete fix for anger/stubborn bursts, but it would be unrealistic to expect a cure-all solution for the obstacles that come with this neurodevelopmental disorder. Great guide to parenting a child with ADHD. Only reason I didn’t do full stars was it wasn’t personally helpful, as I mentioned already. I was hoping for more content and strategies, as it didn’t introduce any new concepts for me. I’d rate it full stars if the author mentioned it is more for those newer to the world of adhd.

This book starts out with some basic ADHD information that can be helpful for parents who are new to the diagnosis. Parenting is hard, but parenting an ADHD child can be even harder. This book was validating in the challenges that are faced when parenting a child with ADHD. In addition, it was very helpful to be reminded of how an empathetic approach is crucial in order to work together and also not break the trust between child and parent.
I liked how there was an emphasis on how we need to care for ourselves and to ask for help and take a break when needed. These are all important things for a parent in general but even more so when ADHD is in the picture.
This book has a LOT of practical tips that are helpful for children with ADHD and those same things can be applied for non-ADHD kids. There are a lot of good reminders about how we need to be careful that in our own frustration and exhaustion that we don’t say things that shame our children. It can almost feel overwhelming with all the content, but it is written in a way with lots of bullets that make it easy to read and easy to go back and reference for specific topics when necessary.

I don’t have children with ADHD, I got this book because I am a teacher and I have to deal with this on daily basis, although since I teach online I was skeptical on whether or not this book could offer me any insight into my specific situation. It can and it does! I would recommend this book for anyone who has an interest not just parents with children who have ADHD.

This book is extremely well researched with the most up to date information. The author presents the information in multiple ways to help the reader see different points of view to gain a well-rounded understanding. There are so many wonderful strategies and tools to help you engage with your child and navigate the often times explosive situation. There are also a lot of information to help the parent with their own struggles in dealing with a child diagnosed with ADHD. Useful examples and situational strategies to make your response helpful and manage the situation rather than escalating the behavior. Just a great approach and a lot of information. HIGHLY recommend this for anyone who has a child with ADHD to not only understand your child but help you manage the day successfully for both of you.

Parenting has its challenges as-is, but when your child has ADHD that adds a new challenge to their daily lives– both theirs and yours. This book aims to be a guide of how to help your child(ren) with being a safe place for them, along with practical skills and tools they can put in their box they can utilize when they feel a trigger in their lives.
This book also covers the types of ADHD, commmon symptoms of what to look for, and ask about from your medical team.
Included with these pieces of helpful information would also be techniques focused on helping the child on emotional regulation as with the neurodivergent folks out there know— that can be an obstacle course in and of itself.
It’s also a good book to remind yourself that nothing is wrong with you or your child(ren) just they are just different in how their brain works and how they process reality.
With this book, too, it’s giving you the parent/guaridan tools to advocated for the child(ren) in your life so they can be the best version of themselves, too.

Reading this book helped explain a lot of the behaviors behind ADHD. The solutions provided are well rounded and actually worked for my son. I liked how it sheds light on solutions you may have never thought about and also addresses the effects on the entire family, not just the child diagnosed.

As an LCSW, I am always looking for good books to recommend to clients and parents regarding ADHD. Rose Lyons has written a wonderful book that I would highly recommend to anyone that deals with children who have ADHD. She starts at the beginning by reviewing the ADHD diagnosis and exploring all aspects of ADHD. Learning to become an advocate for your child is important as is helping your child regulate his/her emotions. The author covers those topics and many more in this book. One of my favorite parts of the book was “Triggering Phrases to Avoid.” This a great book to add to your bookshelf!

The information in this book is so powerful. This topic can be so overwhelming as a parent. The diagnosis in itself can be a lot, but then navigating your child’s path to success in school increases the stress! This book gives very practical information so that when you go to your child’s school, you know what to ask, you know more of the lingo schools use and you understand the power you have as the parent! I 100% recommend reading this book and maybe even reading it again!!
