Dr. Ajzenman gives us fun and functional activities to try at home and in therapy. Occupational Therapy Activities for Kids is a well thought out, masterful collection of activities to promote global development in our children. It could not arrive at a better time as families are safe at home, eager for ideas to continue to promote development of skills in their youngsters. Therapists will find these activities targeted to specific performance factors to build foundational skills which facilitate engagement in childhood occupations. These activities ideas use everyday items in the home and are great for telehealth sessions! Thank you!

This is a great resource for early childhood and first grade teachers to have on hand to lend to parents (as well as a PDF handout on Sensory Diets and/or Angela Hanscom’s wonderful book Balanced and Barefoot).

It is full of 100 games and exercises which are clearly laid out for the parent. For example, for the Scavenger Hunt activity, a complete set of sample rhyming clues is included. This will really help parents who need some activities modeled for them. It’s way more helpful than just saying, "you should do some shaving cream play." Age, prep time, activity time, materials, steps, and skills learned are included for every activity; for many, there are suggestions for how to make an activity easier or harder as needed.

The chapters are Sensory Processing Skills, Motor Skills, Social-Emotional Skills, and Cognitive and Visual Processing Skills.

This book is especially great for homeschool moms & dads as well, because you have lot of time each day to incorporate these ideas. Since OT activities are fun for everyone, you could easily fold them right into your household repertoire of games, knowing that your small child is getting what he/she needs and siblings who are joining in are having fun too!

I received a free advance copy from the publisher and am giving an honest non-compulsory review.

Well laid out and full of fun, interesting activities for young kids. The instructions are clear, and include tips for increasing/decreasing the difficulty level, depending on a child's skill level. Lots of fun ideas that use common everyday items which are readily available. Great resource for helping children, particularly those with developmental disabilities, develop needed skills. Complements professional OT programs very well and breaks down which skills each activity helps to build. Recommended.

Learning through play is an invaluable skill and Dr Ajzenman eloquently lays out a wide variety of play based activities that help me engage with my child. The true winner to these activities and games is my child. Who knew that through play they could learn invaluable life skills and emotional regulation / communication skills? I certainly learned a lot with this book and I recommend it to anyone who is expecting a little one soon, or already has kids.

This is a wonderful new book! As a pediatric Occupational Therapist for many years, I am always looking for new resources and activities to add to my repertoire. I am so appreciative to Dr. Heather Ajzenman, Occupational Therapist, and Rockridge Press/Callisto Media for publishing this book of 100 terrific activities that are geared to children ages 1-6. It is based on play being the primary occupation of childhood, meaningful activities, and was written mostly for parents and caregivers.

The book is separated into chapters and relate to different areas, or combined areas, including sensory processing, motor skills, social-emotional, cognitive and visual processing. Skills are noted based on age and development and address foundational levels of development. Each activity notes age, prep and activity time, materials, steps, safety, and how to modify or grade it according to age and skill level. Most activities can be done with simple materials that most of us probably already have at home. The activities are well thought out and the steps are easy to follow.

Although the book notes that this book was created mainly for parents and caregivers, this is a valuable resource for the experienced therapist, new therapist, fieldwork students, teachers, and other allied professions.

This book is a goldmine for parents of special needs children, as well as for COTAs working with them. Each chapter covers a different type of skill-sensory processing, motor skills, social-emotional skills, cognitive and visual processing skills. Activities within a chapter are organized from least to most complex, making it easier for caregivers to find the activities that will most benefit their child. While the book was intended for use with young children, there is much to offer for use with older children as well. Thanks go to the publisher for supplying an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This is a great resource! It gives parents ideas on what they can do with their children that promotes growth while playing. So often as a parent I get stuck in what to do with my littles so this is a great book full of different games and exercises. I love how the author breaks it down by age and also identifies what skills are being built with each activity. She also labels each activity with how long it will take to do as well as prep for it. The book is broken into broader skills such as motor skills, social-emotional, cognitive and visual processing skills and sensory processing skills. I look forward to using this book for my 2 and 5 year old!

This book is *amazing* for parents or caregivers of kids with special needs. I wish I had a book like this when my little ones needed early intervention and therapy services for developmental delays and sensory needs. The info and activities really make the complexity of child development and occupational therapy simple to understand and implement for the parent or caregiver. Aside from helping parents and kids with special needs, these activities are actually beneficial for all growing children. This book is definitely going on my list of parent/teacher gifts! (I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher, however, all opinions are my own.)

This is a great resource for families looking for a variety of activities to connect with their children while working on specific skills. The organization is great for busy parents, with each chapter focusing on an overall domain, such as sensory, motor or social-emotional. Each activity is clearly explained along with visual symbols that indicate which areas are involved, such as proprioception, touch, smell etc. The materials are listed separately so you won't get into an activity and realize you're missing something! Mostly I appreciate the focus on play. Humans learn best in play and in connection with others. Heather is a trusted expert in this field and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book! I received an advance copy.

“Occupational Therapy Activities for Kids” is a great resource for parents and teachers! The activities contained in the book are diverse, creative, simple, and fun. I appreciated how the author emphasized that each child is unique, the importance of working on “just right” activities (activities that that developmentally appropriate), watching the child’s cues during activities, and modifying activities when necessary. Listing the skills learned at the top of each activity is so helpful as it aids in choosing activities that will be the most beneficial for the child. Children will benefit from these fun cognitive, sensory processing, visual processing, motor, and social emotional activities! I received a copy of this book from the publisher in return for my honest review.

This is a wonderful play book with 100 physical activities to do with kids from 1 year old and up. While the book is titled "occupational therapy" as intended for children with special needs, this is a thoughtful book with activities designed to help ANY kid strengthen certain areas, develop skills, or learn new tools and strategies for improving motor, sensory processing, social-emotional, visual, and cognitive abilities.

Play is the foundation for overall development, health, and well-being. Most of the physical games require very little space indoor, using foods, blankets, pillows, stuffed animals, exercise balls, foam mats cardboard boxes, etc, for games like Ball Fishing, Water Pouring Contest, Drumming & Dancing, Indoor Obstacle Course. The activities range from simple licking and tasting foods, dump truck races to more advanced topics of discussing emotions and strategies for dealing with stressful situations. But most importantly, for parents to observe and take note of the kids' sensory needs and challenging to focus the activities on.

First let me say that I was sent this book by the publisher with the expectation that I would give an honest review of its content. I have not tried any of the activities in this book with children but I feel that they will help children flourish. I was an elementary school teacher for 16 years, the mother of 2 boys and will be a grandmother in a few weeks. I have used similar activities in the classroom with children who have special needs and with my own children when they were growing up, and I feel that these activities will help children of all mental and physical abilities improve in sensory, motor, social-emotional, cognitive and visual processing skills. The book breaks down the exercises into easy to follow steps, what areas/skill the exercise will help and the age/developmental age they child needs to be to complete the exercise. This is a wonderful resource for parents wanting to have fun, learning time with their child or a teacher working with children who need additional occupational therapy in the classroom.

I'm a parent of a special needs child and I saw this book and thought we would give it a try. We have a lot doctor appointments and school and I'm always looking for fun easy activities to do at home to help support the services my child gets. The book is nicely set up with four sections and the sections are color coded so you can flip to them quickly. It split into four chapter covering, Sensory Processing Skills, Motor Skills, Social-Emotional Skills, and Cognitive Visual Processing Skills. There's page that has Tips and Tricks, which I found myself flipping back to a couple of times. Many of the activities had ways to make the activity easier and ways to make it harder, I loved that because as my child masters the easier level I it make it grow with them by making it a little harder. We tried activities in each of the four categories but my main focus was motor skills. Our favorite motor skill activities are We Got the Beat, and Penny- Eating Monster. Penny-Eating Monster was my child's favorite activity in the whole book. For the Sensory Processing skills we tried Match That Sound!. This one was fun, it took a little time to put together because I had to hunt around for my saved plastic Easter eggs and then stuff to put int hem but the time was well worth it. We would like to try Bubble Wrap Footprint but we might wait for a nice day and do it outside so clean up is easier. There are plenty more activities for us to try so this is one book that will be hanging out on the table and not stored away.

This is a great book for all children not just those needing Occupational Therapy. The activities are clearly explained and detailed with an age guide. The activities are easy adaptable if you need to make it harder or easier. I especially like the guide that explains what area the particular activity is helping to develop. I showed this book to my grandsons OT therapist and she thought it was a great resource. I will use this book to supplement his OT. I will also use the activities with my typically developing grandchildren as well, the activities are fun and well thought out.

Learning by doing is often used and unfortunately often used to excuse a child that does not behave, hurt themselves or is disruptive. Learning by doing in these cases is maybe happening, but it is not done in a constructive manner and lacking the appropriate guidance to make it an effective learning tool.
This book is different. it gets children involved in activities that are fun, but also teach important life skills and make the child smarter in a way that does not seem like work nor seem like a chore. The child will actually have fun! This book is well organized, showing activities sorted by the different types of skills, such as cognitive skills, that are targeted by an activity. With 100 activities, the book will provide activities that any child will enjoy. No more wondering what to do on a rain day, work with the child to pick an activity and keep the child entertained, while you as the parent realize that the child is actually learning skills.
