Description
Compassionate and effective strategies for raising a child with ADHD.
Parenting children with ADHD, whether diagnosed or undiagnosed, can be challenging and complex. But just as a child who struggles with reading can learn to decode words, children with ADHD can learn patience, communication, and solution-seeking skills to become more confident, independent, and capable. This book, rich with optimism, tips, tools, and action plans, offers science-based insights and systems for parents to help cultivate these skills.
Combining expert information with practical, sensitive advice, the eight “key” concepts here will help parents reduce chaos, improve cooperation, and nurture the advantages—like creativity and drive—that often accompany all of that energy.
Based on author Cindy Goldrich’s seven-session workshop entitled Calm and Connected: Parenting Kids with ADHD©, this book focuses on developing and strengthening effective interpersonal skills in both parents and children as a way to improve conflict resolution.
Following the parenting principle to “Parent the child you have,” Goldrich offers advice to help readers tailor their parenting to meet the needs of their unique child. The book also leads parents to recognize the value of being a leader and a guide to children, building parents’ confidence in their decision-making, and giving children a sense of safety, security, and confidence.
The principles outlined in 8 Keys to Parenting Children with ADHD are appropriate for parenting kids of all ages—until they have “launched” and are on their own.

From the moment I picked up this book, I knew it was an important read for parents of children with ADHD. As one of those parents, I wished I had had Goldrich’s knowledge and advice when I was raising my own child with ADHD (now an adult.) This book is filled with the latest research, and Goldrich puts it in clear and understandable language — ready to apply in your home. Looking back on raising my child, I know I would have been a better parent had I read this book! I highly recommend!

This book is such a GIFT for parents. Raising a child with ADHD can be very challenging. I encourage so many of my patients who have a child with ADHD to get the help they need.
The normal “rules” of raising a child often don’t apply. The “Keys” in this book are essential, especially Key 6: Be Clear and Consistent.
This is a book I would recommend to all of my colleagues and patients with children with ADHD.
Education and strategies are key to helping children with ADHD. This book is my “go to” bible because it offers step-by- step suggestions with highly effective advice.

The book provides the reader with a rationale to help one understand why the author details the eight steps to successful and effective parenting of an ADHD child along with providing parents with a sense of hope in respect to building a satisfying , long lasting and cooperative relationship with the child.

This book answered many questions but also validated my concerns. It was like she had observed us in our home. I looked her up on the web and she is highly rated there as well.

This book is amazing. My oldest was diagnosed with ADHD and generalized anxiety about a year and a half ago. For the first year, I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong and how to correctly parent him. This book gave me a glimpse into what he may be struggling with and how to not only help him, but also how to parent him in a way that will actually get through to him. I cannot say enough good things about this book; if you have a child with ADHD I recommend reading this.

This book was invaluable to me as a parent in the first year of my son’s diagnosis with ADHD. I underlined, I made notes, I even have a few tips taped to my bathroom mirror as daily reminders! I’ve read many books about ADHD this year, and this was one of the best practical and positive ones.

This book is so helpful in understanding how it feels to have ADHD & how to best support a child with ADHD. Follow it! Positive reinforcement does work best!
I grew up with undiagnosed ADHD & wish this book had been around. Adults with ADHD often reflect on their childhood wondering what they always did wrong at: home, school, with friends, at work..etc.
This book really helps adults understand how children with ADHD think & respond to criticism, redirection, discipline. It is so true!
Follow it!
We are applying it to our own child with ADHD & it’s working wonders in breaking bad parenting habits. And parenting is generally fun now.
The real difficulty is getting other adults to understand that setting expectations, giving extra time for processing verbal demands, using a calm tone, & filling kids “buckets” first help in their lifelong self confidence, developing competency, & success.

Reading this book helped me understand how trauma can affect someone. The author talks candidly about her experiences and the things that trigger her PTSD. If you know someone who has had a traumatic experience, I highly recommend reading this book to better understand what they are going through. If you are the one who experienced trauma, the author describes self help techniques that you may wish to try.

How vulnerable we all are to trauma and how easily our lives can be affected by it.
A touching story that shows what the author went through can in reality happen to any of us at any time. This book also includes background information and valuable lessons learned by the author, all of which put things into perspective. A recommended read.

Writing about PTSD is, in itself, an incredible challenge. The mental illness comes with such overwhelming and soul wrenching feelings that it’s difficult to describe this to anyone who doesn’t understand. But the author expertly documented all of her feelings and her challenges during the early days of her assault. Nothing is left to the imagination. As a PTSD survivor myself, I faced my own triggers as I read this story. However, she gave me words that I needed to understand my past trauma. I had many “aha” moments. i.e. That’s why I react this way; that’s why I feel this way, etc. Going forward, I now have a vocabulary to be able to explain my difficulties to others. Great job, Kandy.

Wow-what an amazing book, Kandy has had so much happen in her life. I can completely understand why her mental health takes a turn for the worse. She and her twin did not grow up in the best circumstance from abuse as teenagers to watching the death of their mother. Her being able to recover and heal is amazing, the story is her story and is full of actual pictures throughout, also warnings of when she is going to tell something related to abuse. The book goes on to tell her story from strategies and techniques that helped her to different medications and side effects. Great read very eye opening

I think this an important book for people to read, especially men. A person’s behavior after a trauma is not a reaction to other people personally but out of a sense that danger can come from anywhere and anyone. It affects us all in different and some of us take longer to recover than others if they recover at all. The authors story and experience is a perfect illustration of how PTSD can have a debilitating effect on your life. The book is very honest and very well researched. Highly recommended.

I love the author’s transparency with the raw and real topic of trauma and PTSD. The author shares her painful experience of trauma, it being re-triggered later in life and how she dealt with it. I applaud her courage in sharing her vulnerable experience which I know will help others in a similar circumstance. She offers practical tools for handling the day to day reality of PTSD. I highly recommend this book if you are also experiencing something similar!

I have read this authors 1st book which was a light read of travels during happier times.
This is an important book and I am glad the author has opened herself up to others.Im sure it was a cathartic writing journey as well as helpful, maybe essential for other assault ( on all levels) to read.
Besides telling the story , there is information for those to use ..tools. for those who have suffered PTSD, anxiety depression, etc.
A difficult read at times, the outcome is inspiring after all the author has been through.
A recommended read.

You can’t help but admire the author who is working so hard to triumph over intense mental health disorders and yet channels what she has been through into a book that will hopefully help others. In fact helping and caring for others seem’s to be her passion and I hope she achieves her dream of getting back to nursing. A book that weaves the authors personal journey with tips for anyone else going through similar issues, and a solid 5 stars from me.
